I've searched and read a lot about pump timing. It seems straight forward enough.

The question I have is where did you purchase your tools from? I've purchased stuff from Miller before - and have been satisfied with price and quality of tool. But that was at least 7 years ago.

Is the puller used on the pump gear just a standard puller or is there anything special about it?

When tightening the pump gear nut - do you have to hold the gear at all or do you just let the gear teeth and a barring tool hold it still?

According to the TSB - what is the reason for the bearing and thrust washer that goes between the nut and pump gear??

Thanks in advance for your help/advice!!

Dan

I got my tool kit from Miller. I just do it like the service manual says with a barring tool. It says use thrust washers that come with the tool so that's what I do. The puller I use is a standard one that I have had for a while. It works fine. If you don't have a service manual this is a good excuse to get one. Other than the $35 I pay for my membership that's the best thing I have bought for my truck.

Thanks Joe.

Yes, I have a service manual - actually, I have several hundred manuals that cover one whole wall of the garage - lets just call it an obsession.

And yes, the 35 dollars/ year membership pays for itself in the first month with the access to TSB's, part number, etc. Let alone access to info from other people like yourself!

youll need the timing kit from Miller or Snap On. it has the dial indcator DV holder socket and thrust washers and bearings. any old puller should work. you will need a barring tool or a way to turn the engine over. i got mine from Napa a few years ago.

the thrust washers are just to ease the tightening of the nut without moving the gear. you dont have to use them, you can just snug the gear by hand and then get out the torque wrench to finish the job.

you will need a 1" 3/16 socket for the gear nut also. other than that, maybe some paint or a marking pen of a bright color.

I also keep a couple spare timing pins in the tool box just for security, they only cost a few bucks each.

almost forgot, you might pick up a can of brake cleaner to hose off the shaft and nut before retightening the gear. you want to make sure it is REAL clean.
