Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Clutch Issues

Recently changed the front and rear differential gear fluid on my truck. I believe I have the dana 60 in the front and 70 in the rear. I have a 2500 4x4 8800 GVW truck. 3. 54 gears. Anyway factory service manual states 3. 66 liters for the rear. It took 3 and was up to the required level (3/4" below fill hole-per factory owner manual). My question is why can't I get the other half liter in there? Do I need to wait and recheck to add more? When I changed the front I was able to get closer to the required amount but was still a little short according to what i measured out. Thanks!

you probably didnt drain the hubs. i think the factory manual is referring to complete fill starting dry. Also, isnt the range from 3/4 below the hole to the bottom of the hole?

No i didn't drain the hubs. I'll have to do some reading in the service manual about that. The owner manual just stated fluid level should be 3/4" below fill hole for the dana 70.

Thats the minimum, fill it level full.

I'll have to respectfully disagree. Spec FULL is 1/4" below fill hole.

It's my belief that a lot of the axle and pinion seal leakage is actually due to overfilling. More is not always better.

Thats fine, however it is hard to measure 1/4" so I fill ALL gear boxes to the filler opening with no problems. I do agree that more is not always better, so I never overfill my trannys.
