Real-Lite Truck Campers

I finally took my truck by a scale tonight with my Jeep loaded on the trailer. Here are my results:

Front axle: 3980lbs

Rear axle: 3900lbs

Trailer axles: 6940lbs

Gross: 14,820lbs

I was under the impression that the trailer weighed in at around 4000lbs, that is what the dealer told me. I know my Jeep is a good 4000-5000lbs(need to weigh it)... so say 5k, does that mean the trailer only weighs around 2000-2500? I assume there are several hundred pounds of tounge weight on the rear axle?

How does this compare to everyone elses scales, are the truck axle weights about right?

Thanks,

CJ

Well here it is. Took my rig over to a "CAT" scale yesterday with a full tank of fuel and "nothing" in it except what it came with off the show room floor. [See signature for the 2001 2500 24v]

Front = 3740

Rear = 2480

Total = 6220

I was almost sure that this rig would weigh in more than this!

:eek:

4000 seems a bit heavy for a car hauler trailer. I have one, 16 ft long, 6 ft 8 in wide, 2 6000 lb axles. It weighs right at 2100 lbs, so, your guess seems about right.

As for my truck, I weighed it the other day. Empty, with about a half tank of fuel, it was 8380 lbs. Of course, it's a 3500 and the flatbed is 3/16 diamond-plate steel, which adds a fair amount...

My regular cab '91, with added 50 gallon fuel tank in bed full and 5th wheel hitch installed, weighed in at 6500 lbs or so - a bit lighter than I thought it was...

I guess I'll have to go back with just my Truck/Trailer to figure out how much stuff weighs.

CJ,

The trailer is a 24ft deckover gooseneck trailer which is quite a bit heavier than my old 18ft metal car hauler...

Never trust the trailer weight listed by the manufacturer. Often, it is more than listed. My gooseneck is listed at 5400 but it turned out to be about 4500. Guess they transposed the numbers. I would weigh just my truck at least once with a full tank of fuel then the trailer empty with the truck. That way you will know exactly where your at. I am fortunate to have a coalyard close by with a scale that is minimally used.

My 18 foot, 10,000 Gross weight trailer only weighs in at just under 2,000. He might have given you the allowable axle weights. For instance, I have 6,000 lb axles. You may have 4,000 lb axles. Theoretically I could go to 12,000 Gross with no problem, but that get's into a different tax issue in GA when you go over 10,000 lb rating on the VIN plate.

Here's my weight with 26. 5T Terry 5er.

4140 Front

4620 Rear

6820 Trailer

15580 Total

The interesting thing here is that truck was at 8760 and my wife was out reading the scale. I am well below the 18K combined weight of the truck, however I am pushing the 8800 for the truck. Do I have to leave my wife at the scale house? I also have a std cab that is a few hundred lbs lighter than a QC. The Terry I have has around 1700lbs pin weight, which is most likely middle of the road for 5ers.

At any rate this make a nice handling setup. The axles have been reversed on the 5er and it sets very level. The new 2001. 5 is only about 1" higher at the fifth wheel hitch then my 1993 was.

BTW, has anyone seen my old Blue 1993 4x4 Std Cab with 33x12:50x16. 5 on Mags, diamond plate, Sun Dancer bucket seats and Warn front bumper that was on the lot at Lynnwood Dodge in Lynnwood, Wa, however I now think it is gone.

Someone got a nice older truck, it only had 74K miles on it.

Good way I've found to take weights is to pull into a closed weigh station, the scales still work, you just look though the window. If you do this on a smaller highway you have all the time in the world to change your load around and take different weights and you aren't breaking any laws. Sometimes the big rig drivers will use closed scales to see if they are overweight so they can go around the next set that is open.

Running Weight

After I filled up last week I decided to get weighed. I was in it when I crossed the scales. Total weight was 7,740. I was kinda surprised to see it that high. There must be more wieght in the bed box that I thought. I am sure the cap adds a good bit also.

Since then I have added bars and changed the tire/wheel combo. I plan on reweighing this week to seek how it changed.

scale weight

They made me stop each axle on the scales at the port of entery in Idaho pulling a horse trailer loaded. Front axle 4248 Back axle 7460 Trailer axle 7620. Total 19320. was licensed for 18000, they told me to get 26000 licensed. I went to 24000, that should cover me. I love the way these trucks pull:)

its interesting how the diesel cops can tell you to how to licsense your truck, when i dont think that anyone with a 2500 would want to combination gross over 25000 lbs. we use 3500's and i wouldnt be comfortable at that weight. we always here stories about how some guys are pulling this and that up a grade at so many mph, but its the way down that really determines how much you can safely pull. when you go to the local dmv to re-register your truck, you'll see why they want you to upgrade your wght regs..... $$$ the truck and trailer capacities remain the same, but the "legal" limits will cost you double as far as fees go. :eek:

CJ,

I weighed my '79 CJ-7 when I was looking for a toy hauler trailer - 3780#, 1800 frt/1980 rear. The heavier rear kinda surprised me. My Jeep has T-18, 9" axles, 20 gal tank (full), factory hard top and doors.

Did you weigh your Jeep yet?
