Rear main seal

I'm going to replace the rear main seal while everything was out of the way, and it is leaking. Just want to make sure I have the right one. My instructor got the parts man to bring me one, from the same place he gets all the colleges stuff. Got a pretty good deal. It's the one w/installation tool - 3909410. I would like to here any hints/advice on this install too. I do know about keeping it all dry. Thanks

When you get the seal started over the crank, and pull the installation sleeve off, take 3 flywheel bolts with 4 or so fender washers stacked on each bolt and screw them in to help keep the seal from walking around, after the outer surface is started in the bore, remove the bolts, put your installation tool over the seal and pull it in evenly with the bolts and fender washers. It probably won't pull it all the way in but you can finish tapping it in with a hammer. The main advantage is it keeps the seal from walking around the bore like a dog chasing its tail.

Do I need to use Loctite on it anywhere?

Depends on if there is any on the new seal. If there is a green or red layer on the outer edge, I'd say no. If no x-mas colors, I'd say yes, but do so sparingly.



Say, your school doesnt have a section for body work, does it? Mine needs some

You seal should have a rubber coating on the outer edge. Instructions for these say to use a soap and water solution, I still like #2 Permatex.



If it is an aftermarket seal with the painted red or green edge you still don't need loctite, it wouldn't hurt, but I still prefer the #2 Permatex.
