Hi, I'm thinking of getting an 03-06 quad cab truck. How comfortable are the rear seats for longer trips - 4+ hours? There are 4 in my family and my sons are getting tall (about 6') so, do I suffer with a mega cab and it's short box (I use the long bed a lot) or do will the regular quad cab be adequate?

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

Dan

The rear seats in the quad cab leave something to be desired. They are nothing like an actual Ford/GM crew cab. We have 2 car seats in ours and they really don't even work very well because the seats just aren't very deep. Leg room may be an issue. Also no rear A/C in the quad. I wish I would have went with a mega cab. My kids are cramped up and hot in the back seat of our quad cab!

I regularly travel with 4 adults and a child in a fairly large car seat in my quad cab. In fact, we'll be heading out on a 2000+ mile trip again soon. No complaints.

I have a 2004 Quad cab and I think the back seats are really uncomfortable on a long trip. The seat back is almost straight up and down and the depth of the lower seat is really short. My dog even complained about riding in the back seat:-laf.

As in most things, you'll have to weigh the considerations, and make the decision that best fits your needs. You are asking for opinions and gathering information which is the right thing do do.

If you travel extensively as a family with four or five persons in the truck, making frequent long trips, the quad cabs are less than perfect. But if you need a real truck with a full 8' bed and only carry backseat passengers occasionally, the quad cab is great.

Personally, I wouldn't consider owning a mega-cab. I own and tow a large fifth wheel and my female German Shepherd considers the back seat her personal territory. But my children were grown long ago and the rare passengers we carry in the backseat only make short trips.

03-09 quads cabs suck! I had to ride back there once for only 40 miles. Don't want to do it again.

My oldest daughter is twelve with an average height. She complains too.

Make 'em suffer!:-laf

I've got a son thats 6'1" and he doesn't complain for now. Give him a couple years for his brother to catch up and then he'll start. If its just the four of you then it shouldn't be to bad, just give them a regular break. If you really need a mega and don't want to deal with the short bed then convert it to long bed. Its more expensive but no complaints.

My $0. 02.

I had a 97 extended cab long bed. When we looked for our new truck, we looked at a quad cab and it didn't have much more room than the old truck in the back seat. We got the Mega and it is great. My 15 yo son is pushing 6'1" with long legs. No problems. A lot of the stuff that I kept in the bed of my old truck is behind the seat now. That said, there are times when I wish I had the 8' bed. If you can score a used Mega at a good price, you can wave about $6000 over it and it will grow an 8' bed! BTW, we do go on long trips and I think the QC would be pretty uncomfortable for a person 5'10" or over.

Suffering makes you stronger!

Whats a few hours in the back? Makes you enjoy your turn behind the wheel. We went to Glacier last year, all four of us (Ma, Pa and 2 teenagers), this year we are going to the Grand Canyon. 2+ weeks and 5K miles plus on the road, we wont complain. But a mega cab would be nicer though.....

I dont sit back there so I dont mind at all if passengers dont like it drive their own car swaped out front seats with air ride seats out of a class 8 truck with mods to the mounts, went to Colorado two weeks ago drove from so cal to Rocky Mountain national park non stop except to get coffee and squirt the dirt and came back the same way ,have a aux fuel tank

Never regreted buying the Mega. Had an 01 suicide door quad-cab with long box. Thought I would miss the long box but just drop the tailgate and use a ratchet strap for lumber, dirtbikes etc. Mega-cab seats recline, there is room for two suitcases behind the seat as well as volumes of storage.

The 04. 5+ quad cabs have no more interior room than my old suicide door quad. In the Mega a 6'7" guy can adjust the driver's seat, get out and sit in the back behind the driver without his knees touching!

Not worried about the kid's comfort? Think of those kids squirming in the back digging their knees and feet into you and the wife's seat all trip. That makes it worth it right there.

Thanks so much to all who replied - man this site is GREAT !!

I'll start looking for a Mega cab and see what shows up. I didn't get the extended cab before and have regretted it... . so... . Let's see what happens.

I agree with Barlow. Decide how much traveling and who is riding where. If every body is 6' tall and you travel alot together, get the Mega. But, My son is the only 6 footer I have and we seldom all go in my truck so my quad cab is great. BTW, you can always buy a MEGA and have it converted to an 8' bed.

Dan,

One other consideration you may have overlooked, and how you handle it depends upon your preferences regarding how often you buy a new truck, how much the long bed means to you, and how much you are willing to give up for your kids.

If your kids are now approaching six-feet tall, I expect they are pretty much grown up. This means that they won't be living with you much longer. Here's a question: How long will they have to put up with the Quad-Cab seats vs. How long will you own this truck and have to put up with a short bed that you really didn't want?

Only you can answer it, but remember: Kids grow up and move out.

My number one priority is my 8 foot bed. We have made many long trips in my Quad Cab with adults in the back seat, NM to Oregon and back. I never had any complaints. We stop often and rotate our seating position. I'm a 6 footer and rode in the back seat many times. I have no problems with the Quad Cab.

My A/C works fine in the back seat.

I am 5' 17" and ride in the back of mine all the time when on the road between So Cal and NW Wa St.

The laptop sits nicely on the center console for me. I don't care if I develope knee pain or develope round shoulders. I only want the Cummins reliability, and the long bed.

Wait a couple months for a 2010 with the crewcab. That way you can get a bigger cab AND a longbed.
