My 89 started making oil last week so I'm replacing the fuel pump this morning. It was leaking a bit externally when I bought the truck 4 or 5 months ago then it stopped and I guess started just leaking it all in the crankcase. I noticed a little orange silicone around the mounting base so I figured it had been replaced at some point with a parts house crapper but turns out when I removed it this morning it is the AC made in England one which I believe is original.

Any way should any Teflon tape or the such be put on the fuel line threads and the elbow that I have to remove and reinstall on the new pump? The elbow had something along those lines when I removed it from the old unit

If you use Teflon tape be sure its not where its not supposed to be, and get into the Injectors. some how.

That's my hang up on using anything at all on the threads. I just cleaned them all up nicely and reassembled without anything extra. Once I get the oil drained and changed we shall see if we have leaks like that and if the lift pump was my only issue or not. If not the injection pump is coming off next.

I use yellow thread dope for all threads except potable water. Yellow is fuel/water ,lquid or vapor ,stable to 3000psi @-50 to +400f. The Teflon bits from previous owner should NOT have gotten past the filter(located between the 2 pumps) to cause any lingering effects in your injection pump or injectors. I went with the HVLP 2nd gen kit@350k mi from Genos. No diaphragm to fail. And no lever arm failures .I wasn't leaking or making oil , it just would not pump. Failed in the driveway after finishing a 1000 mi trip. The manual prime lever quit doing any thing about 50k before the pump wet the bed . Already had the kit in hand (because of the primeer fail I was procrastinating).
What is the difference in HP the 2 pumps will support? (Stock Vs HVLP)

Just thought I would update the thread. I installed the lines without any thread sealant and have not had any leaks at all. The new lift pump also cured my growing oil issue as well.
