2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Rocks in hubcabs??

Okay, for some time now I've had what I THOUGHT was some rocks in my front hubcab. Finally pulled it off and, big surprise, there was nothing in there. The noise is getting louder, so I have this deep sinking feeling that something really horrible is going to be the cause of this noise. Any guesses from my TDR crowd?

Have you jacked up the tire that is making the noise and checked for tire play in and out on the top? Jack up the truck and take a hold of the top of the tire and jerk it in and out and see if there is any play. While it is jacked up spin the tire and see if it spins free. Could be a caliper if the tire does not free rotate or a bearing if there is excess play... just some thoughts.

If it's 4wd, it could be sloppy u-joints. I thought my buddy's lug nuts fell off in the center cap. It turned out to be front axle joints with 150k+ miles on them.

Check the wheel bearings NOW. I've lost the front bearings in my 79 due to lack of grease and when I took my new 90 W150 apart to see if the lack of grease was still a problem, yeppers it was. I haven't had a problem with the current ride but I know you can't disassemble the hub unit any more.

Do like was stated above, jack it up and see if you have any play. Use a bar under tire to apply some force and check for movement. Good luck, Mike

I've had the front brake pads go on my CTD. They made strange noises like you describe. The pads were so bad, some material broke away from the pad, causing the noise. Pull the front wheels & check the pads first-start simple. Maybe & hopefully you'll be lucky.

Check the ballance weights. Drove me and my mechanic nuts till noticed they were loose.

Doo you have a dually?



A cpl yrs ago I sheared a wheel stud and the nut and part of the stud were rolling around inside the hubcap. Only heard it at <10mph.



Then just this spring I had another issue. It would make funny noises - that sound like "hubcap" noises - comming from same wheel (front drivers) around 45mph. I start hitting brakes at diff speeds, cranking the wheels off in each direction, (Be carefull there is no oncomming traffic nor cops in sight - it may be hard to talk your way out of?) nialing the throttle, everything. Seemed to be simply speed oriented. 40-50mph. ???



After my experience a cpl yrs ago - I fingered that maybe I snapped another stud - but this time it was one of the four that were stuck in thecenter cap ... and the centri-force of 45 mph was enough to make funny noises. ???



Yanked off the cap and found nothing. ????



Reassembled. Next trip out - aboot 45 mph I get the funny sound. Now I know that it is the cap - somehow as it is a tinny sound and I couldn't affect it in any other means before.



Next time I yanked off both caps and no noises. Then I would install one w/o the other. (inner/outer) No noises... . Reassmble - noise. :-{}



It seemed that the two were rubbing together at speed. Took the one pound dead blow to the inside of the "outer" at any points that looked to be "compromising" ... . I haven't heard it since. Oo.
