5th wheel pin box/bed rail clearance issue

I have a 2000 32' HR Alumascape that developed a roof leak around the bathroom skylight. I've had quite a few problems with this over the years and keeping it sealed up. It started leaking again, and when I went to repair it yet again, I noticed some bad wood under the roof and around the skylight.

The issue that I have is replacing the roof at the same time as I have the bad wood replaced. The roof is original and well outside of its 12 year warranty. It's not ripped, but has some cracking throughout and creates the usual mess. The new roof material seems remarkably better. But, I was surprised by the cost. The going rate seems to be 1 1/2 hours per foot x hourly rate plus materials for a price high or low of $6,500.

Is that the going rate? The trailer is in excellent shape otherwise, and I didn't have plans to sell or trade it. In the last year or so I replaced the appliances, inverter, brakes, awning, and tires, and it has been mostly repainted thanks to a blowout.

That figure sounds in the ball park. I had some repairs on the roof of an 04 Newmar and the first quote I heard was$9,500 for complete roof. I ended up just replacing about 4 foot of roof. Mine has the plastic type roof, not rubber. bg

I've read about the spray on roofs, but don't know if I want to go in that direction. From the way it has been explained to me, the new roof material is a pvc product, doesn't streak, doesn't tear and comes with a 12 year warranty. Any time someone tells me some thing is zero maintenance I start to wonder. I've always gotten kicked pretty hard when I accept that type of statement as fact.

I bought some coatings from the company that makes the rubber (dicor) my roof is in good shape but is breaking down. When it rains white stuff runs down the windows. This product should extend the roof about 5 yrs. I would be replacing that roof myself not that hard I'm sure there are plenty of youtube videos.

Snoking, I understand. I did go and look at new trailers and even a downsize to a TT. They were pretty expensive and mine is paid for. I did not see major differences in new vs. older trailers-mostly cosmetics. Once I put a roof on, I've pretty much rehabed the trailer. If I'm going to have a monthly payment, I'd rather put my money in a newer truck.

P-Bar, I am evaluating trying to recoat the roof. Whether I will get any benefit from it depends on an evaluation of the condition of the roof. As to replacing the roof myself.....I know I can do the job. It's not that difficult. But it will take me a month of Sundays (literally), and I have no place to get the trailer completely under cover while I do the job.

Check your manufacture for possible in house programs for such a job. I was quoted 2K just to install new planks with carpet for my running boards on my boat trailer, and contacted the manufacture and they have a program that they completely sand blast repaint and restore them as brand new. And It was only 1500 upon completion.

To do it yourself its NOT that big a deal, you can buy all the materials and do it yourself for less than half the cost and a couple of days. If you plan on keeping it that's what I would do, when you strip the old off you can see what the wood looks like and replace it with better wood another thing that was done!! When we did ours it took 2 of us a weekend. I bought new vents, skylights, and new trim and mounted my solar panels in a way as to not penetrate the roof. Our Son now has the trailer and its better than what it was NEW Something I did was to remove that RV TV antenna those things don't work anyway, I put up a RV Dish for Satellite TV and it works ANYPLACE, and have Satellite radio because of the change.

I have seen the RE-COAT jobs on trailer roofs, I guess it works if you don't mind having something that looks like it was taken to South of San Diego to have it done

I know its a Motorhome but same thing.

BigNasty. I was pretty much talked out of a coating. As stated I know I can do it myself. But, I live in the Tampa, Florida area. It rains all the time-every day and hard- 2"-3" per hour and it's not always predictable. I do not have access to indoor or covered facilities. If I risk the weather and lose, .... So, the better part of valor and all dictates that I pass on this one. I do appreciate it though. I am putting on all new vents etc.

Just throwin out some ideas is all, hope it works out for ya. For me I took an overnight trip ON my RV just to be with a few close friends. My Dog, and 3 Mules. and will continue to do it this way until I feel that im endangering someone besides me. My RV roof is very simple to replace ;)

Have to do a BUNCH of Cooking to wear out that stove!!:D

GOOD LUCK TO YA

You gotta love low tech solutions! I can't trust my dog that close to my breakfast-even if it's in a frying pan on a fire! I've lost more than one breakfast that way. :{ Thanks for your advice. Believe me a big part of me wants to do it myself and save $$.

LOW TECH!! well guess next time I can do without the tarp, I prefer the NO TECH approach to things. You don't see a sleeping bag do ya :D the deterrent for the Dog is leaning against the walking staff holding the tarp out to make a roof.
