During my wrestle with my injection pump, I decided to go and visit with the previouse owner on a few things... such as if the injection pump was rebuilt etc.

But the other big thing I was interested in is the transmission. He said it was rebuilt at 115k, and when it was rebuilt, the guy put some kind of rubber bushing in it, and that is why my transmission is so quiet... I'm seriouse, this thing is silent.

So does anyone know anything about it? I've never heard of it before.

He told me the only two things he ever had to do on the truck for the whole 185k he owned it was the transmission and the rear brakes. :)

I wonder how come it's turned into a lemon since I've owned it?

Will do! I'll get back to the previouse owner and try to get ahold of the guy who rebuilt the transmission... it might take a few days so keep an eye on this thread.

I never realized it was something special, but really though... my getrash is absolutely silent. :)

Sounds like he got rid of the pickup at the just in time. Actually, 210K is quite a few miles on the truck; nothing for the engine, though. You just gotta learn what can wait and what cant.

I know nothing about the rubber bushing, either. My Getrag is noisy, but not as bad as some I've had. By the time I get to 45mph, I cant hear it anyway.

rubber bushing in getrag

Somebody is pulling your leg. There is no place to install a rubber bushing inside the getrag. I just replaced the syncro on third gear and plan to run a bit longer (like up to 750k miles) before a real overhaul. I only have 410k on the transmission now. Installed a 'good' used syncro. All the gears and bearings are mirror bright. But there ain't no rubber anywhere. This is the fourth time I have had the transmission out. Once to replace the pocket bearing and once for the throwout bearing and once to replace the pilot bearing. This time for the syncro. I reshimmed the bearings each time. I have spent less than 500 dollars total on the transmission in the 410k miles.

My truck is twd and highway miles. My ratio is 3:54. From all the post I read, the fwd is more than the getrag will stand. Keep it out of OD when loaded and don't run hard in third. If the terrain is serious mountains, back off to second and tool on over at medium throttle. If your wallet will stand the strain, go to a 5600.

I didn't take the manual to Alaska. I bought a 93 with auto OD. It might have killed it on that trip. Never know. I am going to drive it to Vancouver next week. That ought to tell the tale.

How bout he had a rubber bushing replaced as in a transmission mount bushing?? Or whatever the correct terminology is. I bet that was what he was talking about or didnt understand what the mechanic told him he had replaced.

I always get off the wall comments ideas from people. " Yeah my new duramax is laying down 900 hp at the wheels " - Oh really wow thats pretty good. " ATF, used motor oil in fuel " I imagine theres other moron comments I've heard and let it go in one ear and out the other. ... Bill

Ummm... well, the previouse owner said the guy who rebuilt the transmission said he put a rubber bushing somewhere that made it really quiet.

My transmission makes NO NOISE whatsoever, and it has more miles on it than it did before the first rebuild. I'm not pulling anybodies leg.

I've never had the shifter out of one of these but is it possible he stuffed a rubber bushing somewhere on the shifter stalk to eliminate any rattle????

Never heard of the rubber thing.

The Getrag in mine was rebuilt about 15K miles ago by a shop that does big truck trans and axle rebuilds. It works OK, but is noisy in 4th at low RPM. It is sometimes hard to get into 1st and reverse from a stop. Not the best trans, but it works so far. I run five quarts of 5W30 synthetic. The one I had in my '93 W250 was a lot smoother at 150K and no rebuild. But, I heard that the guy I sold it to had it go bad recently. I'd bet money he let it get low on oil. It had a small leak, and I told him to keep an eye on it, but unfortunately he wasn't the type to look after things like that.

I'd bet money he let it get low on oil.

JFitzgerald makes a particularly important point.

I have made this comment before. I have a 4500 that was run low on oil. (not by me) It doesn't matter what kind of oil, how you drive, what you pull or how much you overfilled it at one time. If you let the oil get out of the trany or rear or motor, it will kill them.

And don't tell me that it gives no warning. Look where you park and if there is a spot, find out why. I know that this is preaching to the choir but maybe someone will read this post and get the message. You can even live with a leak if you know how much and add lube accordingly.

RGT may be right as to stuffing a rubber bushing somewhere to stop the rattle associated with the transfer case but the getrag doesn't have rubber inside. The shifter will transmit noise into the cab and there are a couple of different types of joints in the shifter shaft. If someone came up with a way to issolate the transmitted noise, that would be good except that the noise is a warning bell to the informed driver that signals a problem. I touch a drink cup to mine to amplify the sound so I can decide what is going on. 61 years old and don't hear as good as I once did.

CB Just bought some parts... one was the factory bent shifter from a 93 Getrag. This shifter has a rubber injection moulded mount between the shifter and the mounting flange. Could the previous owner have ment that?.....

That very well could be. As I said, I had no clue what he was talking about... I was going to talk to him whenever I get a chance.

Thanks for all the input guys.
