I was pulling into my shop and once in there turned, or so I thought, off my truck and it didn't turn off. It had a buzzing sound and the engine was running normal. I tried several times to shut her down with the ignition key. I popped the hood and grabbed the electrical connector that feeds the shut down solenoid and diconneted it and got her shut down. Never done this before.

My question is what happened#@$%!

Feedback thru a bad starter solonoid. A common problem. Rebuild the contacts and all will be fine.

Do a search; much has been posted about this problem.

Thanks Land Shark,

I ordered as set of contacts and a diode from LarryB's. TDR just saved me alot of time and money what a great site well worth the anual fee. :D

hopefully your shutoff solenoid didnt get fried. I guess they get hot and bake themselves to death when getting backfed like that.

It seems to be working fine now instead of turning the key off to shut down the engine I pop the hood and disconnect the connector for the shut down solenoid this keeps the problem from happening over and over. I would think that if you keep back feeding the solenoid it would eventually fry. Mean while i have parts on order to fix the problem. There used to be alot of discussion about manual shut downs on this forum I think this problem would definatly support a manual shut down argument.

Same thing happened to my 98 Q-cab, I got the bigger starter contacts from Larry B's and it was a easy fix, simple directions and works great. Good Luck.....

Forrest, the shut down solenoid is being held up/energized via the feed back using the pullup coil not the hold up coil so it is very strong and the only way to de-energize it is to unplug it.

Got my contacts and plunger in mail today. I also ordered a saver diode but was not in bag. I emailed Larry B hopfully will get it by weekend so I can put them in on Saturday.

Forrest, I wasn't clear on what I said. I ment to say that the shut down lever is connected to the solenoid with a pin so you can't move it unless you were to disconnect the solenoid.

I got my contacts replaced. See attached photo of the old ones not much left of one of them no wonder they were sticking.
