I normally over research something I want but in this case im looking for advice and real world experience. :) I have a 06 dully and I need steps, I use it to haul the RV now and jumping in and out is getting to be to a pain. I have narrowed it down to a few options

Tough Country::: American Made Truck Accessories

Tough Country dully steps

I really want access to the rear bed as well as the cab, Trying to hook up the 5th wheel over the rear fenders is a pain.

Official AMP Research PowerStep, BedStep, Bed X-Tender

Amp-Research power step

I have admit at first I was like really hell no, thats "pick your favorate 4 letter word" but I kind of like the idea of the full width step “wife and friends with walking issues” looks easier then say the tough country step.

If I get the Power step I will also need the bed step 2 to help with the RV issue but I kind of like keeping the side of the truck free of the clutter that the Tough Country will give, I don’t wheel this truck, and the closest offroad is a yard or boon docking with a 5th wheel. I have gotten 100K miles without a step so Im used to the look. but I also know sooner the latter the front and rear bumpers are getting replaced and maybe a winch upfront.

So anyone that has used either? Opinions? Ideas? Deals?

tough country seem to be about 750 while the power step at 1200 ish. not a big differance but something to contemplate.

Thanks

go with the Amp step's they tuck up under the side of truck nicely n the sec you open the door there there bed step is same way well worth the investment n very easy to self install took me about 2 hr's and it's all plug n play

Can't beat the AMP PowerStep.
The install is clean and the operation is flawless.
They'll put a smile on your face every time you open the door and get in the truck.

had amp step on our 06 for almost 5yrs, worked flawlessly the whole time. (exception; when off road in the mud, started unplugged them when under those conditions) Bought a 2011 Laramie Longhorn just took the factory steps off and will be putting on new amps this weekend. Also added the bed step this time very easy!! You maybe interested to know Amp is coming out with a bed step 2 although it may not fit a dully. I give amp steps 5 out of 5 much more convenient and useful than fixed steps and you can get them from Geno's

One more for Amp steps. I had the dealer install mine at purchase over 6 years ago and I still get a charge from the amazed looks and comments from strangers. They are outstanding. Only glitch with mine came a year or so ago when one quit operating during over 100* heat. It started working again when it cooled down and has never repeated the problem.

if you are really wanting good access to your bed you may want the tough country dually running boards instead of steps, they are a good flat surface which may help your wife and others, I've had them and been very pleased with them

Tough Country::: American Made Truck Accessories

I've also had the Wagg Kick out steps if you want the tube look

My son had Amp steps on his 09', he just purchased a 11' and ordered Bestop power steps somewhere for considerably less than the Amp steps, the Bestop's also have a LED light, he had one little issue and customer service was great, he installed them himself, is not very handy and is extremely pleased with them

you might want to check them out as the lighted feature would be handy at night

Amp step also come with the LED lights also very handy very easy to install plus you don't see them till you need them

One more vote for the Power Steps.
I installed mine and they have been great. Have had them on two different trucks (different pairs).

The power steps sound nice, but I'd be hesitant to try them up here. I can see the snow and ice building up on them (or mud and sand) and then one day as you're falling on the ground, you notice they didn't extend.

I have the Luverne Mega Step. Stainless w/rubber the full length. W2W version goes from wheel well to wheel well. I believe that's what you're looking for. I've been very happy with mine. The seven inch width is nice to prevent door dings, and very comfortable to stand on.

I had the Amp steps on my '10. I absolutely loved them.
One note about the Bestop steps: Bestop used to make the steps for AMP Research. There was a falling out over price, and Amp started making them on there own. Bestop's manufacturing is not quite as good as AMP's, hence the cheaper price.
By the way, the Amp steps are rated to hold 600 pounds, evenly distributed of course, but still.
My 3 year-old could get into my 4x4 '10. (no lift)
