My fuel shut-off solenoid on my '97 2500 is getting difficult--plunger won't go up into the barrel when I crank the engine, so I have to do it by hand. The price from the dealer here in Torrance is over $500. 00 for a new solenoid. Does anyone have a another, less expensive source?

Thanks!

Thanks everyone! I forgot to ask--Could the problem be in the relay, and is there a way to check it?

You could take it apart and grind the contacts a little. I have a picture-by-picture display in my readers rigs. Its under its own gallery.

I've had my fair share of F-S-S probs. I actually got a NEW one from the st---dealer @ cost and was about to put it on. Got home and my latest issue of TDR mag was there. Decided to sit down and read first... GOOD THING I did, because in the 12V section it had a guy with the same probs as me. Next day I took the relay apart, ground the contacts, and she fired right up! Oo.

I hope your truck hasn't just sat all this time, because you can always turn the key to on & pull the solenoid up manually. ;) I did that for about a month last year with the new truck, luckily that time Piers didn't have any F-S-S's @ TiM '04 or I'd been $150 in the hole because the blue wire fuseable link to the F-S-S on the D-side battery had corroded. :-laf

Thanks Mark!! I disassembled the relay and the contacts were very corroded and pitted. I cleaned them, reinstalled the relay, and the truck started right up. Thanks again--you saved me about 150 bucks!

Yep, Piers in the cheapest on the selinoid. I got a new relay at the dealer for approx $45. 00 going to clean up the old one and toss it in the glove box :D

Hey Mark, do you remeber what issue that was ?

Warhorse,

If you ever need to replace the relay you can get a 70 amp relay from an electronics store. It's about $12.

Scott I will check tomorrow and see if I can find which issue it was, I keep them all in a stack on my bookcase. ;) Its been a while..... at least 2 years..... way back when I had the "White Wonder" my Reg Cab 97 :)

I was just going to ask that myself, let us know Mark, hopefully it is not too far back of an issue. My truck is hard to start as well and I bet it is the contacts too cuz the solenoid seems to work just fine.
