Mine's the same

It will chirp when I shut it down on a hot day.

My wife said she was in town with our 21 month old son while I was at work. A guy with a CTD parked nearby and shut it off. The boy heard the chirp and asked "Where's Daddy??"

theory on chirping

[Given that the actual sound comes from the belt slipping when the engine stops quicker than accessories can. ]

Appears that, given all the other variables, autos may indeed chirp more than boxes.

Could that be from the extra drag the TC/transmission is putting on the driveline after shutdown? Makes sense to me.

Dad's always chirps, Mom's chirps 90% now that it has a few miles on it. Mine hardly ever chirps.

They have autos.

My '99 auto would chirp in the summer but not the winter. My '01 hasn't chirped once.

I think the std flywheel won't let the engine in the stick shift stop spinning quite as abruptly as the tc in the auto would. If the fan clutch was engaged from it being hot out and me running the A/C I could get a quite impressive chirp out of the '99. I kinda miss that... .

Mike

mine chirps summer and winter BUT when the engine is cold it dosent chirp, after it warms to operating temp it chirps like mad!

Jim

I've switched out my pulley to the one put out by pratical solutions and am running the goodyear gator belt. Still chirps, but not as much as before. Oh well, I can live with it.

I've been tracking this sound and can generalize that when I let the truck cool down longer the screech is minimized. My thoughts are that when there is a lot of heat in the belt it expands a little and slips some. But, when I idle for a longer than normal time before shut down the heat in the belt is lessened and doesn't slip as much = diminished screech.

SteveAZ. Good comeback to that PSD driver. :)

Mine only chirps when it's hot out. It bothered me a little at first. Now I kind of like it.

Chris

When mine did it, I had to have the muffler bearing replaced. :p

Seriously, mine only started doing it, after oil spewed out the motor when 4x'ing, some got on the belt, and it now chirps on chutdown. Didnt do it before that.

edited: oops, thats "shutdown".

I'm pretty sure if you take it in you can get the chirp re-installed under warranty:D :D It must be some bad software and you need a reflash:)

mine chirps on and off. haven't found a direct coralation (sp?) to when it will or wont.

But I do like it:D set's it apart from the wannabees.

Mine always chirps, but it chirps even more if iv'e been running for many hours ( 15 to 20 hours) non stop, that cummins just doesn't what to stop pullin. It never wants to stop. It just keeps going and going and going. It's kinda a major event to shut her down . It's like the cummins telling us thier not done for the day, please give me more to pull, lets not stop!!!

No chirping or complaining from the powerstrokes when they get shut down, they just want to rest at the end of the day. They must be really tired? Makes sense doesn't it!
