Hi, Trying to remove the starter from my 1993 W250, and wondered if anyone has some advice for removing the three 10mm spline head mounting bolts. The lower bolt looks like its impossible to get to. I do have a small 10mm spline wrench, but no spline socket set, since I have never before run into a spline head mounting bolt before. Any tips on removing these mounting bolts would be greatly appreciated!

You might need the 12 point wrench, available thru Genos, and some sort of cheater bar on the end of it. Because of the position of the bolt, it's hard to get any torque on it.

The top starter bolt is always the worst one to get loose on second gens.

10MM 12 point wrench, a jack and a short piece of wood is all you need. Remember you are pushing up to break loose (laying on the ground).

If the bolts are too tight to break with out damaging your knuckles try this.

Get your floor jack or whatever type of bottle or scissors jack you have handy and a piece of 2x3 or 2x4. Put the wrench on the starter bolt parallel to the ground and put the 2x? between the jack and wrench. Jack up and watch the bolt come loose.

Get a 10 MM 3/8 drive socket, a universal joint, and all of your 3/8 drive extensions. Put a 3" between the socket and the universal. Now use all the rest of the extensions to bring the breaker bar and or the ratchet up by the VP or Ve pump, you should be able to break the torque loose from the top and maybe the outboard bolt. Anyway that's what worked for me on the 2nd Gen, never had to remove the one on the 1st. Moose

Thanks for the info. I didn't realize a straight 12 point socket would work on the spline bolts. I'm pretty sure I have a 10mm 12pt socket in the toolbox - somewhere- .

I'm going to give it another try this weekend. I bought the starter rebuild kit from PDR but they have not shipped my order with what might otherwise be referred to as alacrity.

Thanks to all for responding to my post!
