Died again. It was cold, -12, I plugged it in but the *#@ GFI was tripped and the timer never moved. It started with some throttle and a stall. Truck was idling fine for several minutes and died like the fuel was cut off. So I pop the hood and check the fuel gauge, it reads 20psi, and the fuel selenoid is up. Not really a fair test because of the low temeratures. I bought fuel from concord truck stop and did not add power services anti-gell. However, they must be running winter mix in concord nh now. I drained filter water seperator before I left. Funny thing is I had backed trailer in so front of truck was up with just under a 1/4 tank of fuel... Air leak strikes again. Or is it the injection pump going south? Truck is parked same way plugged in for four hours lets see if it dies again. Started truck, pressure was 25psi, dropped to as low as 6 shortly after starting and then slowly climbed to 15 and back to 25 psi. Truck did not die. I guess the p7100 can tolerate low fuel pressure. After the holidays I'll replace fuel lines from tank to strainer and return line. Thanks for all the input.

Truck running well

Changed oil, sent it out for analysis. Silica is high, don't know why, been using fleetguard air filters. I will re-sample oil in early summer. I guess the knock must be cummins approved since it doesn't seem to be reflected in the oil sample numbers. Fuel levels are low etc. I think the truck is going to rust out long before I can wear out engine. Thanks for all the replies.

I fueled up in NH (exit 5 off of I-93) last week and had the same problem when it got down to a quarter tank once it warmed up it was fine. Go figure???

PFeick, I would say your having lift pump problems.

Does the stalling out and hard starting only happen when the tank is 1/4 full or less? If so your pick up tube in the tank mite have a hole in it. This has been the problem for some members (Sometimes clogged screen on end of pickup tube).

Engine noise; try adjusting valves when the weather warms up.

RMcKinney1995 2500 stock 150000 when mine done that.

I didn't have time to work on so I fIgured a Dodge dealer would know and could fixt it pretty quick. WRONG!! It was the lift pump. It took $800. 00 to pay them 4 days to find the cause. I guess they knew as much as I did!!!

Valves have been adjusted. Yes I agree fuel lines, heater puck, lift pump are all suspect. The fact that I can duplicate stalling conditions (with low fuel, nose up, parked for 2 days or more) is comforting. At some point I will wrestle fuel tank out and repair all lines behind it. Waiting for warmer weather to wash and paint area. The slapping banging idle gives me the most concern at the moment. Tired of people telling me the truck is loud or that it has a knock. I believe injection pump needs to be rebuilt since oil analysis for wear metals seems ok and truck starts and runs strong. I swear if i turn idle down and crack number 3 injector the truck purrs like a kitten. Maybe the plunger on the pump is scored. Or the injectors are toast. However, I swapped 1 and 3 injectors and there was no noticable difference. Injector tips looked good no carbon buildup. I'd rather replace them than pull em and pay for pop testing/new tips.

With the warmer weather I got around to dropping fuel tank. I painted frame and floor board spots that were rusty. Fuel filler neck was a rusty pos. Wire brushing and painting it precipitated a pin hole leak, $75 bucks for a new one. Painted fuel tank straps. I replaced rear brake lines. Rear fuel lines need replacing but not this time. Rubber fuel return hose by filter looks in poor condition. Truck passed inspection.
