I am tabbing my kdp tomorrow and I have a question. I am using TST tabbing kit

it say to insert the plastic seal starter sleeve from the inside and then install the gear cover. How do you remove the plastic starter sleeve after the cover is on? It looks like to me one end is larger than the other end (the one that goes into the seal. ) Do you pull the sleeve out between the crank shaft and seal with a pair of pliers ? I like to know so I don't mess up.

It slides right off, you may not even need pliers. Make sure the crank surface is clean and dry.

When i did mine I read till I was blue in the face and had bulging eyes, One suggestion- use some guide pins for the cover, a couple inches long this will help guide the cover on and the sleave will POP through like no bodies business. And give you a third hand on getting the bolts started.

Marv.

Got the KDP tabded today. I had a big oil leak a week before and I thought I was killed. When I got the cover off the pin was still in about 3/32" recessed. My leak was coming from the gear cover plate . The bolt were just tighter than finger tight. The front seal was not leaking. When I installed the cover the starter sleeve popped right AMAZING . One trick I did use was when I was taking the bolts out I cut a piece of card board and cuts slits into it so when I removed a bolt I put it into the card board. Then I was reinstalling them I did not have remember where the short and long bolt went.

You can't get the bolts mixed up. The long ones won't screw in all the way in a short hole. The short ones don't reach the threads in a long hole.

can anyone please school me on the kdp, I really dont have a clue about this issue and doubt that mine has ever been changed

There's a very good explanation in the buyers guide starting on page 225. You'll find it on the left hand side as soon as you get on this website. The writers explain it a lot better than I ever could. Plus there's a lot of pictures.

Are you the original owner? With 240,000 miles and no problems you're doing really good. It's not that difficult to do and you'll be glad once it's done.

If you have any specific questions, keep posting. A lot of owners have gone through this and can answer any questions you may have.

Beck I have TST KDP right up and Joe G write up on how to do fix the KDP. Send me and E-Mail I will send them to you or you can go to TST's site and read it.

The KDP is a dowel pin for the timing case. It can fall out and cause a Lot of Damage!

How long have you owned your truck?

About one year, new to the diesel thing, all though, I knew the first and only owner, and he was very good with fixing stuff, Ill ask him, but doubt it has been replaced, I am leaking oil fron timing cover, think it must be a cover gasket, I hope

sorry, -- email address removed -- Thanks a bunch, I seriously need a diesel mentor !

I used an electrical ring terminal as a tab. Cheap, lying around the shop, and works just fine.

When I got my truck, I wanted to order the TST Dowel pin repair kit, but it was out of stock. I was nervous driving my truck without tabbing the pin, so I made a tab out of a fender washer. I thought it was too thin, so I looked around and found a Stanley door hinge about 3/16" kicking around. It just took a bit of cutting and grinding to make it fit. I installed it with a slightly longer bolt and red loctite. It's still hanging in there after 35k miles.

Beck: I can't remember if the write up mentions it or not, but you may want to re tighten the gear case bolts, while you have the cover off. I did mine one at a time. I wire brushed the bolt threads, and cleaned the other threads with brake parts cleaner and a shot of shop air. I then re torqued to spec with red loctite. I believe there are one or two bolts that are covered by one of the gear blanks. You can get to most of them by rotating the engine.

The TST kit does not include the gear cover gasket. If you want to replace it, the Cummins part number I have is 3918673. That along with the front seal included with the kit should take care of any oil leaks you may have from the gear case cover or front crankshaft area.
A lot of guys don't bother with the cover gasket, but use a sealant or one of their favorite gasket maker. It's your choice.

Good luck with your repair.

I wasn't really concerned with thickness - a slice of a soda can would be enough. There's no force behind the dowel pin moving, it's just vibrating forward.
