2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Taking off the mufler and just straight pipe

If I took off every thing and just a straight pipe would It be to loud and any power Increase on my 95 diesel?How about fuel mileage

I tried a straight pipe on my 97 and it was loud. My 3 year old complained once that his ears hurt and I got rid of it. It also had a very loud drone at highway speeds. Just my opinion of course.

You might consider a 4 inch system with a Donalson 40 inch truck muffler. No restrictions an the noise is not so bad as with just a straight pipe Fuel mileage is dependent on driving style.

To cut down on some of the noise you could cut the tip off and weld it at more of a 45 degree angle. I did this when I first got my truck and it does help. As it is now your exaust note reflects off anything beside the truck (cars, fences, walls). Also make sure you have no exaust leaks, even the smallest is very loud. Yes a 4 in exaust is the best, but straight- piping is the cheapest!

I like the gutted mufflers. It is a free modification if you can cut and weld. It gives the benefits of a straight pipe without the noise.

I setup a straight pipe on mine. For a few wheels I had just the downpipe on, with the pipe ending right under the cab. That was pretty loud.



I got 6' of 3" tubing, and cut the resonator and muffler out, put the tubing in place. I set it up so that the tubing I put in runs level with the body of the truck, just had to cut and reangle where it hooks to the tailpipe a bit.



I'll go get some pipes in a bit and post them up for you.



As for it being loud, it's pretty loud outside, but inside I really don't heard too much of it. My reason's for doing it, well more flow, and the muffler was rusting out.

I've straight piped my 97 still have the cat though. Everyone tells me it is sweet sounding. And it isn't to loud except when pulling our camper it does bark a little. I like it.

When i straght piped my 96 it bumped my fuel mileage up from 17 to 18. My fuel gauge is broke so i go by mileage and i check my MPG every time I fuel, so it was definitely noticeable after i straight piped it, this is of course if you drive sensible. It is loud though, but i ike it :-laf

My 94 is same as nates above. Not any louder than my other muffled 94 and I get over 21mpg stock condition.

Its not like cutting muffler/resonators off a gas motor, the turbo does alot to deaden sound. Riding with the windows down its loud but not earsplitting and I can still listen to the stock stereo w/o turning it all the way up. With the windows up its not a whole lot different than when I had my rusted stock system on. I can't tell much of a performance difference but now it sounds awesome. Now when I can afford a few mods I might be able to live up to all the noise I make. My little boys love it and my wife just shakes her head. Oh, and I debated for a while whether to leave it off or not; glad I did.

I have been running straight piped since about April 2002. I have a 4" Jardine exhaust, and an HX40 turbo, so it's a true 4" all the way.



It is quite loud inside the cab, and yes, I have the dreaded drone ar 1800 - 2100 RPM inside the cab, and it is quite annoying. I have done extensive sound deadening with SoundStop foam throughout the entire cab, as well as making an oil pan cover from the same foam. It has helped a fair amount.

Straight Piped!!

Straight 4" exhaust is the only way to go. Makes it sound like a real truck and its so fun to pull up next to the gasser trucks and rattle their windows (Oh windows were down and their cab is now filled with black smoke !! )

No muffler, no resonator, just one piece of pipe in place of it all. The exhaust shop welded hangers on the pipe at all of the factory exhaust hanger locations and I think that may have a deadening effect on the drone. I have a little drone but not much, noise with the windows down is mild but does echo off of things on that side of the truck. Sounds a lot more like a big truck, and more like a Volvo VHD which has the muffler mounted under the truck and about 6-8" of straight pipe from there to the top of the cab. Kind of fun passing slow pokes especially if they have their window down because it has a bit of a bark under the circumstantially necessary acceleration such situations require.

I had a guy tell me in a not so nice tone my truck sounded like a dumptruck,

I said pretty neat huh he couldn't believe I wanted it to sound that way.

My son tells that a certain garbage truck sounds like it.

But the highway drone is verrrry annoying.

Pulled the muffler and cat from mine and just put in a straight 3" pipe, signifcantly louder. Lots of turbo whistle and big truck noise coming out the back end now. serious drone noise at 2000rpm though, gets a little anoying after awhile, fortunately when towing the trailer i run about 1700rpm.

had the flowmaster 3. 5" forceII turbo back system,sounded great. got a little carried away with bombing,now have a heart throb 5" system. it is kinda loud,but i think it sounds good. some people say it is too loud,but it really is not that bad. the 6" tip looks good also.
