The basics

98. 5 2500 QC

The radio was replaced about 2 years ago. Turn key off, raido goes off. All was well till a few months back. Radio hot lead is the stock radio hot lead.

Then when I turned the key off, the radio would stay on for a second or 2. This happened until the radio would stay on for about 4-5 seconds. Then strangly, it stopped happening. About a week later, I realized the cigarette lighter didn't work. Blown fuse. I replaced the fuse and the lighter started working again. Now the radio problem came back too!#@$%! The cycle repeated itself till I stopped replacing the fuse. Fuse is non working right now. All seems well except for this problem.

Holy blown fuse, Batman, What now?

I would cut the lead to the stereo and run it directly off a continuous lead that always sees 12v. I do that with all my vehicles if I have an aftermarket stereo. That way you can leave the stereo on without the key in the ignition making the horrible chime noise... I would then see if the fuse is blowing with only the cigarette lighter. If this is the case, you can reasonably assume that there's a problem with the cig lighter... Could be that something has gotten crossed over, and is now causing problems. It seems to me that this is what's causing the problems. Take a good ohmmeter and hold one lead to the center of the cup that the lighter slides into, and then ground the other lead to a good chassis ground. If you are getting a reading, I'm thinking that something has obviously crossed over and is burning out the fuses. Could be that the actual lighter part has failed and it always in contact with the leads off of the internal cup that it slides into. Not too sure, just my . 02.
