I am looking to purchase another Dodge Ram with CTD soon. I have a 2nd Gen. 2500 (2001. 5) and I'm looking at purchasing a 2006, 2500 with the 48RE automatic transmission.



I really want a 2004. 5-2005, 2500 5. 9L but I can't find many of these locally in good shape with less than 100K miles so I'm doing homework on the 2006, 2500's since I have found a few that are in great shape with less than 100K miles.



What is bothering me the most about the 2006 trucks are the TIPM electrical issues I am hearing about while doing my research. Some of the issues are caused from towing/hauling while other issues are not.



My question is, how do you FIX the TIPM permanently? I know flashing it is only a temporary fix. Do I have to purchase a new or updated TIPM that can handle higher amperage to fix the problem?



Is it 2006 worth the investment or should I just keep looking for a decent 2004. 5-2005?

The only way to guarantee you will never have a TIPM problem is to not own a truck with one.

Do not be afraid of trucks with 100k+ on them. I have purchased 4 trucks with well over that mileage including my '06 which had 533,xxx when I purchased it 3 months ago. What is much more important than the number of miles is how the truck was maintained.

The '06s and '07s are excellent trucks, the very best of the 5. 9s and 48REs.

Avoid plugging trailers with beat up, or neglected, wiring, or lights and brakes wired up by young dopers with red, blue, and green hair. The latter is what happened to me when I was dispatched to pick up a storage silo trailer at Oxnard and this young idiot doper who was a nephew of the owner was wiring trailers. He plugged the pos into the seven pin receptacle on the back of my '06 and smoke rolled out.

Some TDR members can tell you about a protective plug-in device manufactured by a fellow TDR member that will protect the TIPM. He makes a good product available at a good price although I can't recall his or his product's name.

I did some checking and found TDR Member "Motorhead" who makes the TIPM Savers. I PM'd him for more info and price.

Thanks for the tip... I called just got off the phone with him after a 45min. talk. Very nice guy and yes, he is not making anymore of the units.



I have some tips I'm following up on regarding protecting the TIPM.

Someone posted a source for replacement just a few days ago. I tried a search but didn't work for me. There are some on ebay.com for around six bills. bg
 
Any idea where to locate a new TIPM? Been looking around and they seem to be hard to find.

Defnitely heard good things about the Dorman reman units…if you get the right one for your truck, then they are Pn'p, no programming required.

Thanks fella's. I tested everything on my truck and my reverse lights won't work. When power is applied the reverse switch works fine and the lights work. I am thinking it is the TIPM.

I looked at Rock and they seem to be out of what I need right now.
 
I have been battling electrical issues with my 2006 Dodge Diesel. I replaced both interstate batteries and first drive it boiled passenger side battery. I replaced both interstate batteries again and also the crossover cable. ran fine on a short trip. then when truck sat for a week it would not crank. charged batteries and started it and ran truck for about 40 minutes. killed it and next day both batteries drained again. I am wondering if my Total Integrated Power Module might have an open circuit that is draining my batteries but don't know how to test this. What should I do next????

2006 Dodge 2500 Ram 5.9l diesel. 205,000 miles.
