What rpm's do these engines like? I need to figure out around what gear ratio I am gonna need once I do the swap. I will be running and automatic. I am hoping 4. 10 or so would work... . that is what is in my 14bff and D60... . and I have another set with 4. 56, but that may be to steep. Hopefully I can use one of these sets as it will save me some $$ on regearing. Actually, I think I may have a set with 3. 73's in them also.

Hmmmm.

Thanks!

i was told to keep it under 2000rpm's. it's very slow with 3. 54's and my trailer. i gave up on that and started shifting around 2250. i dont know if its right but it works for me. good luck. :)

I don't exactly understand your application but I have 4. 10's have towed aboiut 60,000 of the trucks 103,000 plus and regularly run it at 2500 to 2600 when pulling hills. (22000 GCVW) Generally downshift from 5th to 4th at 2000 to keep RPM and HP up.

When making long highway trips I have spent hours running anywhere from 2250 up to about 2700 rpms. Usually anything over about 2200 and mileage starts dropping off pretty quick.

I try to keep it around 1750 towing for noise and fuel mileage. I am running 315 tires and 3. 54's

Keep in mind, if you have a 5 speed, its the sub-2000 revs for long periods of time in 5th that contribute to the 5th gear falling off. The throb of the engine at those revs acts like an impact hammer. Worse under load.

I know your mileage is best around 2000 +/-, but its a lot smoother above that. I generally try to keep it above 2000.

I always try to keep mine above 2k. Just keep in mind anything below 1300 is considered bogging it, and not good on it just keep it above that and you should be fine.

whats the negative side of running above 2250rpms towing light, if any. when should i be upshifting?

dont want to take over this thread but its on subject and i dont want to start a new one. :)

The only real down side is fuel mileage, and of course noise. Our little engines will run forever at 25-2700 rpm if we do our part on maintenance.

I like to keep rpm above 2000 if the engine is working, if crusing, my best fuel mileage is at 2k and below, this is of course without lugging. One old definition of lugging is not being able to accelerate, if you give it a bit of fuel and it doesn't speed up, time to downshift.

I find I get my best MPG's @ 2000 RPM or less.

Problem is I'm getting runned off the road at that speed. :(
