Anybody on the 275's question?

They would only add about 30hp, but if you want a nice set of injectors & money is no object..... I'd recommend some Don M 1. 6 [F1 injector] or a set of Industrial Injection 3 flow 100hp. I love Industrial Injection injectors myself... they are clean & smoother than stock idle/power. Something around 80-100hp injector would work great for a guy who tows. Anything bigger than that will lead to egt problems with a stock charger. I heard guys say that smarty is working well with Banks..... maybe a Smarty would be a good choice too. Smarty will get that trailer rollin. :-laf

First off thanks all for the input and excellent suggestions. I got to apologize I thought my profile listed that I had a Jacobs exhaust brake and it does not!! The exhaust brake was one of my the first additions and as you can see I have the lower rear end gear. As it stands now with the Super Chips in the safe tow I can easily run to high EGT's so doing something so that does not happen would be great(I don't know how high it will go as I don't let it get past 1300 for any length of time seconds at most). A real pain to tow watching the EGT gauge. So I should go with RV275's or perhaps even go to 100 hp injectors still no egt problems with either? If I understand the input so far it would be best to go with injectors first then maybe a Smarty if I can afford it. Then it sounds like better intake air then exhaust and finally PERHAPS and new turbo. Hey I can afford anything as long as I do a little at a time most of the time. Certainly would be cheaper than buying a class 8 tractor with less the 500,000 miles then convert to be able to tow my 5er. I could sell the Super Chips but I don't want to screw anyone. I know some have purchased these on Ebay and they would not work!!! This thing is VIN locked if I first use it to put the truck back to stock program will that unlock the Super Chips so somebody else can use it, anybody know? I guess I am getting old and slow, as I tow on flat land 2,000 rpm and 60 MPH in 6th gear and of course going up grades down shift to 5th gear but necessarily thrilled with the noise when doing that. Also sorry I did not repsond to fast was not able to get on the puter for a few nights. Again thanks everyone I love TDR!!!

If you return your truck to stock..... yes it can be used by the guy who buys it. If you are getting high egts with the setup that you have... ... then something must be wrong. You may have a boost leak. I would get that checked out first... ... then look at upgrades, because I ran a edge comp, 90hp injectors & never had egt issues with a stock turbo [at the time]. How much boost do you get? Maybe look into getting a adjustable boost elbow.

I don't think I have a boost leak. Check clamps every oil change and when pulling a grade I am seeing 21 psi. Now I don't let the EGT get above 1300* so back off or down shift to a lower gear. I get these egt's pulling my 14000# 5er. It appears to me the EGT's would keep climbing if I did not back off. I thought this was normal without mod's. Any other suggestions?

By the way will have to think on the exhaust change to 4" as then I would have to replace the Jacobs exhaust brake I currently have.

You can use the exhaust brake if it is a turbo mounted unit & still get a 4" exhaust. You should be getting more boost than 21... ... I would get a adjustable boost elbow & turn it up to around 35. I used to run 40lbs boost with my hx35 & had 90hp injectors & edge comp... ... never got egts over 1200 pulling 13000 lbs. Most common places for boost leak is rubber hoses on intercooler plumbing, intake manifold plate where airhorn bolts on. I think you have a boost leak..... my truck stock got 28psi boost.

Interesting I think I will have to see what boost I really can get. I am watching the EGT's so close not looking to see what the boost really is getting up to. If I am not getting close to 28 will start looking for a leak. I will have to try it unloaded and in a few days as it is snowing tonight and let things dry out some. Will be using the wifes Jeep tomorrow.

You can make a homemade leak detector..... I use a 4 inch fernco & cleanout cap [schedule 40] with a air fitting screwed in the end... ... works great. I set my compressor regulator to 7 psi & find them every time. "You might be a hillbilly" :-laf

Hmmm... . :{

I ran Mach 1's (65Hp), Smarty, TST, HX 35 set at 35 psi and I could blow past 1500F EGT in about twelve heartbeats. Getting to 1600F plus was not really a problem either.

Jim

See sig, DD2's, Smarty, KSB1B, 4. 10.

WOT max EGT is 900* & 35# boost and no turbo bark now with the 4. 10 gear change. Very very little smoke, just whispy.

Towing 13k, 10#, 65 mph, 900* (wife's driving can't overtemp it)

Exactly... . look what you had stacked on that truck to get those temps..... this guy has a superchips tuner. I didn't get temps like that when I had 90hp injectors, edge comp stacked with superchips tuner..... with a stock charger. I towed with this setup for 6 months daily pulling 12-13k & on long hard pulls saw 1200* max.

He has an 01. The stock turbo should have the wastgate set at 21 psi. So appears that he has no boost leak. Mine is an 02, stock turbo, same thing- 21psi, no boost leak, no adjust. boost fitting. If I am wrong, please, somebody correct me.

I am also looking at a set of injectors, with Smarty to come after that. The 275 RV look as a good choice, costwise maybe the best.

You may be correct..... my truck may have been set high, but I thought 28psi was stock pressure.

I will check my service manual and see it 21 or 28 is the max boost for my truck. Are all you guys in agreement that injectors come first them something like a smarty? Then get more air in then exhaust to 4"? Gosh I sure don't want to buy a clutch to soon but I am pretty easy on clutchs I think.

Bob Cochran,

I would do the Smarty first, then injectors, then air intake. Personally I would not spend the $ on 4 inch exhaust for what you are wanting to do. If you drive easy you can make the clutch last even with upgrades, assuming it is in good condition now.

Godspeed,

Trent

Yeah OK. oops. I was talking about unloaded WOT for some reason. So I guess I was not exactly discussing apple to oranges.

You are talking 4th (5th - direct) gear pulling a grade right?

I am starting to feel like a hijacker here. My apologies.

blacksheepdiesel-Thanks for the information on what to do first and I am in agreement in not doing exhaust until last or not at all. To be honest one of the things I need to do right away that may stop truck mods for a little while is I desperately need to add tire pressure monitoring to my truck and 5er before this spring. This will run me about $600 so other mods will be put on hold.

Oh I checked the service manual and it said the wastegate is set to open at 19PSI maximum. So my 20 or 21 seems ok but I could not find at what boost sets an over boost code though. Should have taken the time to look as soon as we started talking about possible boost leak. Sorry guys.

Again thanks for the help.
