Just out of curiosity's sake what all is required to convert an manual trans to an automatic?

Can a cable actuated floor shifter like a B&M be used?

We have done a few and yes you can use a floor shifter. I use the locar shifter with the piston knob. (looks cool) You can build a bracket off of the floor pan and set it under the original shift boot. (stealth look) The swap is not hard at all. Landline me and i will be more than happy to help and or answer any questions. 1-800-575-0229 Brad

Sell all 500hp to me and you can have an auto :D

If I sold you all my HP goodies to ya Biggy I might have enough $$ to buy a junk stock transmission. ;) :-laf

I wait on them deal's to get my stuff man! :-laf

Well i could tell what it would take but if you come on down here i can show while we do the work to my truck and to yours. :-laf

i would love to have a manual.

I've looked into and I got all my info from Kendrick's Diesel Performance. I was planning on using the standalone conv. from ATS. You can use a Lokar 727 shifter. Will need to extend rear driveshaft. Shouldn't have to do anything to the front. Fab a mount for the transmission to mount to the crossmember. The crossmember already has a slot in it for an auto, so you don't have to switch it out. You can adjust the TF case shifter linkage. Kick down cable. Need a TPS and engine speed sensor. Oh and convert your TF to bolt up to an auto. From when I talked to him that was all he said you needed to do. He said with the ATS kit it made things a little easier.

I checked out the Conv. kit on ATS's site... . the description is a little lacking.

Part Description

Transmission Shift Controller Package, Full Transmission and Torque Converter Control, Wiring Harness, Connectors, Software and Manual included

Sounds like only wiring comes with it, no "hard parts" like listed in the picture?

#ad

Price does seem senseable though if it comes with most everything pictured, probably not the TC and definately not the trans. ;) :-laf

I need to find me a junk stock transmission to tear into :-laf

I'm getting ready to sell my completely stock 96 ext cab 4wd auto with 98k miles... . if you want to pull your mods and make a deal let me know.

Mark,

Lets just put yours and mine side by side, a weekend, couple (read: lots) cases of beer and go to work. I still have lots of warranty left on my GB transmission and the triple disk is lifetime. ;)

I really want a stick.

Edit: I'll even let ya keep the mag-hytec pan. LOL

Edit again: And while I'm there you can set my pump timing up. Man this just keeps sounding better and better. :D

Thanks for the offer, but I already have my head O-ringed so I plan on keeping this truck. If it wasn't for that I would go that route. ;)

Input shafts to transfer cases are different. Why are you wanting to cnvert?

I knew they were different, shouldn't be to hard to source one of them or if H-C and I swapped we could swap shafts.

I dunno I've driven a couple of higher HP Autos and I guess its like my father said I'm just getting a little burned out on sticks. Both of my trucks (79 Chevy K20 on 35's play toy ;) ) are sticks my Dodge has a DD which is a little slower to shift but I still love it, 2 of my 3 work trucks I'm in all day are sticks... ... guess I just want to be able to put in it D and set the cruise :-laf

I considered an auto when I bought my current truck but all I had ever seen was $4,000 & $5,000 #'s flashed all over TDR so I didn't want to drop that much on a transmission. I was green then and I have learned a lot more since then. Hindsight is 20/20

Well to build a bulletproof transmission you will have at least 4K in one, but consider that you have about $2k in a good clutch for an manual that will handle the same power. I have a built auto in my 97 and love it. I really like the convertor that Goerend offers, very tight convertor and you can get it in a triple disk. DTT makes a nice tight convertor, but they unlock it for any type of power application. I can't say enough about the Goerend setup if you can't tell. I have my throttle cable set a little on the tight side and the shift are perfect. Nice firm shifts about 1700 rpm at 1/4 throttle or so, but get on it and it shifts about 3300-3500 rpm. The ATS stand alone convertor is neat, but kind of spendy. I think about $1500 for the VB and controller. From what I have heard there is not much in the way of an established shift algorithim yet.

Yep in a nutshell, but I got my Input & DD for less than $2K. Refer to page 1 I wait on deals to get my stuff. ;) :-laf

Right now I'm wanting to talk with Dave Goerend about a possible swap with Hummin Cummins. He seems seriously interested and I am too. :D
