What Goes On When Releasing Parking Brake

I’m going to be performing a transmission service on my 68rfe, I figure I might as well install a deep pan with a drain plug while I’m at it.

The Revmax pan is the one I was looking at, as well as the mag-hytec. Are there better ones you guys are having good luck with?

Or do I stay with the stock pan and weld a bung on it for a drain plug? I’m ok with that if the deep pan is not a worthwhile addition.

You might give PML pans a peek.

Additionally....I think Dorman is offering a replacement stamped steel pan with a drain plug now....and they’re not horribly priced.

Be sure to do a complete fluid exchange. It’s easy on the 68rfe.
I had the MagHytec on my 68 but to do it again I most likely would go with the PML because it does not have paint on it so it should dissipate heat better.

I've used Mag-Hytec in the past, it's a quality piece. That said, I'll be the contrarian and just recommend drilling the stock pan for a drain plug and drive on. Trans temps weren't any different with or w/o the extra 4 quarts in the pan on my 47re. I have other things to spend a couple hundred bucks on.

My Mag-Hytec pan is not painted it is AL and finned with a magnetic drain plug. The pan also allows for a temp probe to be installed in the pan for oil temp readings if so, desired. The Mag-Hytec pan uses a gasket instead of RTV sealant which I like.

That's what I did on my previous trucks. Low cost and easy.

I’ll mostly agree. The only thing I’ve noticed running the PML pan on my AS69RC is it probably takes the transmission fluid a little longer to get to where it settles in, due to the increased capacity. Since my truck has the TBV.....it generally hovers at the same temperature as before. I’m sure an extra amount of fluid capacity will never hurt.

And....last but not least......a couple hundred bucks will buy you about half of the PML pan for an AS69RC......mine ran $391.43 (including shipping to my door from Cali).

But ultimately all the extra fluid still gets to the same temp, I do agree the extra capacity can't hurt I'm just not a believer that these expensive pans do much for trans temps. $391 will buy a lot of fluid/filters for normal maintenance...I'm not criticizing your choice whatsoever, I did it too. I just have a tough time justifying the cost for my use.

Interesting! I thought all MagHytec products are painted.

I stand by what I said. It's easy to do so why NOT.

Just because you think it's a waste many others may not.

I said "Be sure to do a complete fluid exchange. It’s easy on the 68rfe." Really don't think that statement sounds like it's a "requirement" or its "detrimental" if they don't.

I think we have beat this topic to death, how about letting me give my opinion and then if you want give your reason for not doing so and let people decide instead of twisting my words.

Someone is spending that much $$$ on a pan I'm betting they may be interested in getting rid of ALL the old fluid.

We've been through this many times before. Every time you bring it up, you state in a way that those that don't know any better may think it would be a bad idea NOT to do what you are suggesting. And every time you do, I will chime in to let them know it really isn't that big of a deal and it's fine to do it the way everyone else does.
"be sure to" implies there could be bad joo-joo if you don't.

My biggest concern about a deeper pan is that they all appear to be cast and I am nervous about a stick/rock bouncing up into it and cracking it vs denting it.

I dented the oil pan on my 05 with a stick and am a little gun shy... of course if you rarely leave the pavement it's likely not an issue.

Exactly.

It sure isn't a bad maintenance practice, but far from required.

I had a bare Goerend deep pan on my 06'... It was heavy, thick cast aluminum. Never saw temp changes worth raving about but it did look nice.

I have down some off-roading with my truck since I put the AL Mag-Hytec Trans pan on in 2009. In the 135K miles I have on the truck the pan has had no issues with ground clearance., or anything hitting the pan. Now if I was going to do some serious rock crawling than I would worry about the AL pan.
If you are going to be concerned about an AL transmission pan, what about your engine oil pan ground clearance or if you put on a Fass external fuel filters that hang below the frame?
I just saying?
