Can you guys tell me which oil has the least crank case vent smell? I only have 2200 mi. on my '04, and the fumes from the vent are a really noticeable. I'm wondering what oil I might try when I change the oil so that it is not as strong as it is now. I've already changed the vent hose location and have worked on the cowl leak. I'd really appreciate any help in finding a solution. BTW, this is my first diesel.

Thanks. ;)

Congrats on the new Diesel!

Before you go down that road of changing the odor from the vent pipe please consider two important issues:

1) The intake air for the cabin comes in at the wipers.

2) The odor you smell is from under the truck.

Its true you can change the odor by changing oils but what happens if you develop a small exhaust leak?

Carbon monoxide is odorless and can be deadly so the odor you smell is really a harmless odor alerting you that cabin intake air is coming in from another entry area.

Dan Rounsevell found a better fix IMO and posted a "how to" you can download here:

with a diesel i wouldn't worry about the CO. it doesn't produce enough of it like a gasoline engine to kill [look at the unfortunate people who kill themsselves in closed garages, all gasoline engines]

Thanks for the feedback. I have fixed the in-cab smell that was caused by the wiper cowl leak, and I've extended the crank case vent hose and this has taken care of the in-cab smell. I am looking for ideas or opinions on which oil has the least objectional smell. I know this is all subjective, but what oil have you guys noticed to smell the least when venting from the crank case tube? What are they using in these from the factory so I can stay away from it?

Thanks.

The factory oil is the worst for smell. I started to use Rotella and this was bad also. I switched to Delo and the smell is much less. However I switched to the Delo at the same time I extended the vent tube to the rear of the cab. Not sure which was the better improvement, the new oil or the tube extension.

I have noticed that Chevron Delo 400 has only about 1/3 of the smell of Rotella and for a much shorter time after an oil change. As you get some miles on new oil, the smell will diminish. Usually with Rotella, it takes 4 or 5 tankfulls of fuel and only about 1. 5 to 2 tanks of fuel burnt for the smell to go away with the Delo.

I agree the amount of CO from diesel is about half that of a gas engine but why breath any of it. Then there is poisonous sulfur dioxide from Diesel Exhaust but not as deadly.

Another reason to get the intake air going in where is should is when you are pulled up behind a poorly tuned gas engine in traffic, if its hot out the Big Vistronic Fan will be pulling it into the engine compartment. Try pulling a spark plug wire off a gas engine with a CO meter near by and you will be shocked.

You might be onto something there... I wonder if it could be because Diesel Owners are happier people Oo. that wouldn't consider something like that.

Saturday morning my 5-year-old grandson changed the oil on "his" truck. He was kind enough to let me help. ;)

He also lets me make the payments and drive it, so all in all he's pretty fair about it.

Prior to this, we had the dealer change the oil and it smelled pretty bad for the first 1,000 miles or so.

Using Delo 400, I can't detect any smell at all.

We're both happy with it. :D

i'll weigh in here too--although we're all in agreement about rosmella

i use mobil del-vac--just because of the results I saw when I drove for j. b. hunt--that, and an extra bottle of delvac fits in the toolbox better than rotella --- of course so does delo.

i was told that these engines ship with rotella in the crankcase--which probably explains the no-change results everyone sees.

delvac smells less than the factory oil--but that is just my personal perception.
