Chose AFE Proguard 7 drop in cone at 50,000 miles. Read that stock air box not all that restrictive. Sold by Geno's and I trust them. No oil analysis to prove anything yet.

I'm not sure that the stock air box is all that good for flow. Stock tuned engine, I could pull down the filter minder at less than WOT with a new filter. With the same stock filter I wasn't able to move the minder even at around 400+hp with the PSM and CBT. From my experience, opening up the air box made a different and this is probably a much better mod than any filter change.

Hi Avi,

I am not a member of TDR, but please respond for me:

"After running a good 12 hours and 200 miles in the Mexican dirt with Avi, my filter (which was cleaned but not oiled prior to leaving for the trip) became clogged with an incredible amount of sediment. I checked the inlet tube at the time I knocked out all of the dust and it passed a visual inspection- no signs of debris or dust. When I got it home, I immediately cleaned the filter and checked the inlet by wiping it with white lint-free gloves used in the aerospace industry. Not a single drop of dirt or oil was inside. The AFE drop on filter did a great job filtering, but I felt I couldn't never get it as clean as I wanted to, it seemed to get soiled too easily after that episode- I can't explain why. I have since replaced it with a custom CAI. "

AFe filter

I ran the original afe and then switched to the Pro gard 7 when it became available. All was going fine until I cleaned and re-oiled the afe. Sucked the filter minder down. Pulled the afe again and recleaned it and re oiled it being carefull not to over oil it. Ran it and pulled the filter minder down. Stock truck PSM kit installed. Cleaned it again, now with fresh afe oil reoiled it. Pulled the minder down again. Installed the "stock filter" and called afe. Tech gave me a bull s--t song and dance about perhaps the filter minder was bad, didn't pull down with iether the original filter nor with the original afe (which was cleaned and oiled ) the same way as the pg 7. Called afe again got a different tech. who tried to blow more smoke by telling me that it was the speed of the iar rushing past the filter monder sensor opening that was sucking it down. I called BS and said that in that case runnjing no filter at all would suck it down faster, got ****** and hung up the phone.

jRan the stock filter until I gould get the amsoil drop in and drove on. Got great pleasure in tossing the afe junk in the trash. Larry

Very interesting.

Thanks for forwarding that Avi!

Could be worse. I have a friend here that runs an 06 Duramax duallie and had a local shop install a K&N cold air kit. Twice lately, I have been over at his shop, and he popped the hood open to check on something. I noticed his cone air filter just sitting in the bottom of the cold air box. He said that it happens pretty regular. The last time there, I tried putting it on and just did get it to go over the elbow. I wonder what his oil analysis would look like?

Well, it looks like according to the oil sample info, I shouldn't have too much to worry about. Thanks to you guys for putting my mind at ease. If ya'll get the pics of that guys inlet tube, post 'em up! Thanks again.

We were miles into Baja at the time, the high speed run on the beach sucked up all his power with the mudders he was running so we stopped to check it out. He knocked the dirt off the outer surface and threw it back in. I don't think he took any photos.

If you want max filtration, stick with the high-end Fleetguard filter, IMO. Last study I read was that the flow difference between the Fleetguard and the oiled filters was negligible and the filtration was higher. Plus they are much less expensive and you can change them more often if you want.

Please post flow #s your results vary greatly from my own.

You guys are running the regular airbox right? The only thing that I hate about my stock airbox is those cheap clips that latch it shut. I'm sure it's nothing to worry about as Dodge/Cummins wouldn't have made it that way if it didn't work, but I just wish it had a more secure latching system. One of our other members had a good tip that i'm gonna try next time I clean my PG-7, he said to put a thin layer of Vasoline around the edge of the filter element where it meets the lip of the top of the airbox.

Vaseline has a very low temp rise before it liquifies... ... ..... I recomend a silicone based synthetic grease. K&N used to ship a small tube of it with their 2nd gen drop ins.

I just got my UOA back from Blackstone and silicone was 9 (normal) after 8500 miles. Mine seams to be working just fine.

My truck is stock other than a Smarty, which is set at a max of 3 since I have no other mods or even an EGT guage yet. With a new stock filter I was sucking down the filter minder big time. I installed the AFE "Superstock" PG7 cone shaped drop in replacement and have yet to move the minder in several months.

YMMV... .

Hey guys, I saw this thread come back up that I had initially started. I have since foregone the use of my AFE filter after I discovered this...

On the pic of the turbo, at the top of the pic on the inside of the turbo, that smudge mark was from my finger running through the dust that the AFE let through.
