I lost the fifth gear nut. I need to drive about 150 miles pulling a fifth wheel. Will it hurt to drive in fourth gear that distance (wondering about metal in the oil ) or do I need to make other arrangements? Also I did a search and could not find anyone who said the gear itself had to be replaced. Is this usually the case? The gear normally survives or should I expect to replace it.

Thanks

From past experience (once) it will cause some wear to the nut which will result in the particles ending up in the transmission. With that said I probably put a few hunderd if not a few thousand miles on mine before I got all the pieces together and the time to fix it.

The gear does not NEED to be replaced however from it rocking it probably has worn so it would be more likely to do it again. if you have the money change the gear, if you have more money do one of the upgrades ie fully splined or torque king shaft

I drove mine from Wendover UT to SoCal after loosing 5th gear. Oil didn't look much worse than it does at a normal change interval.
