I still have my stock exhaust in place, and while I like the quietness and lack of drone, I need to improve the flow to lower EGTs. I did some forum research, and saw where Donaldson mufflers are highly regarded. Overall, it appeared those who used the Donaldson 090535 complained about loudness/drone, where those who used the 090544 didn't. I'd appreciate comments from anybody who has used either or both of those mufflers.

I'm interested in this also. I took the muffler off my 07 but left the converter on. Now when I tow my toy hauler, the drone will drive you nuts. I've also been told to use the Donaldson 090544 but would like so feedback before I do it.

Steve,

I just made the switch to a Donaldson muffler, and could not be happier. My situation is a little different, I bought the truck used with a 5" turbo back Magnaflow system allready installed, and it was "ok" without a load. But when towing, it was just too loud, and droned really bad, so much you could not have a conversation in the cab. Since I allready had a 5" exhaust installed, I purchased the Donaldson M090535 from Ryder Fleet Products as mentioned in several other post on "TDR" for $79. 44 and just installed it in place of the Magnaflow. It is just the right sound level and "Tone" for my ears. I just pulled the Grapevine "Northbound" last weekend with a trailer weighing just over 7000 lbs. and it sounded great! It is not stock quiet, but it is not even close too the noise and drone of the Magnaflow... . of course 5" pipe does not help. As an extra bonus I can even hear a little bit of turbo whistle at the exhaust with the Donaldson! no such thing with the Magnaflow muffler. It is a straight through muffler "no baffle plate in the middle" and fits just fine with some custom brackets welded on. I HIGHLY recommend Donaldson mufflers to anyone who would like lower exhaust backpressures, without the noise and drone.

Dan,

Thanks for the info. Though "drone" is an entirely subjective topic, your reply contradicts what others have posted about towing drone with the 090535. Does that muffler have a baffle of any type inside, or was it straight-thru too? If I've understood correctly, the 090544 has a cone-shaped baffle inside. Looking forward to hearing from anyone with experience with the 090544.

I am running the 40" M085171, its rated for 8-12 db attenuation at max flow of 3119 CFM, and 1800 CFM at 1 In HG. Its relatively quiet and had no drone, but the EB noise was unbearable, so now I have a resonator on there as well.

The M090544 is the 51" muffler, rated for 13-18 db of attenuation, at a max flow 2006 CFM, and 1158 at 1 in Hg.

The M090535 is a 51" muffler rated for 12-17 db of attenuation at a max flow of 3260 CFM, and 2340 at 1 in Hg.

I would say the M09535 is straight thru, and the M090544 has a baffle.

I have gone from the 3. 5" to 4" with the donaldson muffler. I also added the HE351 turbo and 4" elbow and downpipe. Quiet yes and no drone. Not sure of egt reduction as I added ATS manifold and turbo all at once. Stocker is quite restrictive looking. I cut the mounting tabs off my old exhaust and welded them on the new stuff myself while using the factory 4" tailpipe. Lots of guys have done the same or similar mod. A couple hundred clams and a little time for a quality exhaust system better than stock.

I have a donaldson on my 98 12 valve. It's louder, but I have some significant hearing loss, so it dont bother me.

I replaced it several years back, I dont remember the part number.

It's more deep and throaty. I can hear the turbo whistle when idling. :-laf

Me too - I've got this tightwad fantasy of getting someones take-off 4 incher tail pipe and slapping it on the end of that Donaldson for an uber cheap and quiet improvement.

Trouble is, I dont want any more noise than stock.

You have a 4" Tailpipe on your '03, at least I do. On the 4" muffler some guys take a bar and open up the one and only baffle for a change in tone. Go to a parts place and ask to have a look. The Donaldson works for me.

Prairie Dog,

I live in Silverdale, Wa. and own a 2003 SRW quad cab 4X4. I changed the 3. 5 to a 4" from Diamond eye exhaust (stainless) with the Donaldson muffler. The tone is more like a big rig outside and quieter inside. I have seen a noted reduction in cab noise while driving on the freeway, the setting on the radio used to be on 11 or 12 and now can be on # 9.

If you are interested I still have the stock tail pipe on the truck but need to change it out soon with the one that came with the kit.

Dave

Morsed,

You state that your system has a Donaldson muffler. So you know which number it is and did this muffler come with the system?

The Diamond eye kit I bought was # K4218S-SP (Straight Pipe) and I installed a Donaldson # M090544 (4 " muffler). I had to remove the hangers from my stock muffler and weld them to the new one.
