204,775 miles on Saturday. Complete failure with ECU codes 0251, 0252, 0253, 1688, and 0602. Happened while towing boat on the interstate. Truck will idle but not rev past 1050 rpms.

240K on my original VP44 and still counting, no problems yet. monitor supply pressure from the lift pump and run a good fuel lubrication additive, you should not have problems. before you buy any 24 valve, take it home or to a diesel mech. and see if the lift pump is still alive. if there is no pressure at the fuel filter with the engine running there is no way to know how long it has been that way, and if it has for long, the inj. pump will not be living for much longer either

On my first '01 I had a relocated fuel pump and pressure gauge, and on a road trip through the boondocks of eastern Oregon the lift pump began losing pressure and ultimately died. I should have stopped right there, but not wanting to be stranded I kept on driving hoping I'd make it to civilization of some sort. After about 15 miles I began losing power, and the truck got weaker and weaker by the mile. But I kept driving. Finally it was so low on power (25-30mph tops by now) I gave up and left the truck by the side of the road.

Next day a friend helped retrieve my truck, we hooked up a tow strap and he pulled me 70 miles. Most of the way I had the key on and engine in gear spinning over so I'd have steering and brakes, which meant the VP44 was spinning over with no fuel supply.

After all that VP44 abuse one new lift pump and I was back in business. Drove the truck another 30,000 miles without a single hickup before selling it, new owner went another 20k with no problems last I knew.

Mine (engine mounted lift pump)died at about 57,000. I had to take it to the dealer twice before they did anything (I guess the fact that the leaking diesel fuel was clearly visible and gave off a very distinct diesel fuel scent wasn't indicative of malfunction the first time around).

I got the in tank upgrade because I was 24 years old and didn't know any better but I have since installed the AirDog 2 and a fuel pressure gauge. Much better now.

I destroyed a VP44 with improperly heated veggie oil on the road somewhere between Los Angeles and Phoenix. That was an expensive lesson to learn.

Hello

Didnt you install a Smarty at the same time? What do you think about it now that youve got a few miles on the truck?
