I gave you a list of reasons to drive a little slower than the multitudes of 4 wheelers on the road. Safety is paramount, it isn't just "to save gas". You just don't get it do you? If cars stack up behind you while you are doing the speed limit then the hazards of them passing is greater than the same cars passing me if I am 5 or 10 mph below the limit.

No, you don't get it. If you are going the speed limit, there will be far fewer cars that feel the need to pass...and less cars backed up to begin with.

If you want to be "that guy", so be it. I don't want to be that guy.

The next gen 6.7 engines will be 100% emissions free with reported 10% increase in HP and 20% increase in TQ.

Any wild guess what the Dually, AISIN, 4.10, 3.73 and 3.42 combo's GCVWR will be?

I predict that it will be a 4500 pickup so they can up the drivetrain and GVW/GCW's. I think the 3500 is maxed out.

Have you ever driven in the northeast corridor? You're in the minority here if you're doing the speed limit. On a good day, at 72 mph, I'm lucky if i can keep up with the flow of traffic. Plus, our roads for the most part are in lousy shape and not really able to handle the speeds people drive on them.

This whole issue comes down to, IMHO, personal preference. Do what suits you, and your equipment, best. The person behind the wheel needs to be comfortable with all factors. What works in the mountains out west won't work in the jungle of metropolitan New York.

There are quite a few 2nd gen G56 conversions out there. I was given the particulars of the swap by another TDR member, and my conversion with pictures is in issue 69.

Thanks for the heads up. Issue 69 was before I bought my first diesel truck and before becoming a member. But I searched and found a thread from 2010 that gave an overview.

All that aside, do you drive slower than the posted speed limit (specifically, 2 lane roads) even when you could safely do the speed limit.....all while backing up traffic? Would you back up traffic to enjoy the scenery or to possibly save a few bucks?

If you read where this discussion started, you will see how it is now wavered.

You guys can go as slow as you want, I'm just saying I will not hold up traffic for my own (non-safety related) selfish reasons.

"I" have a self imposed 70mph MAX at night and a 75mph MAX in day time "IF" the law allows. My tires are rated for that and my truck HANDLES the RV WELL in all weather conditions at those speeds.

This is perfectly reasonable and makes sense (well, except in "all" weather conditions, but I suspect you don't actually drive 75 in a snowstorm ;) ). Plus, this would include the vast majority of major highways.

I have been following this entire discussion (mainly for the laughs at this point). That's why I said it comes down to personal preference. You (and they) can do what you want, I'll do what i want. Is one way better than the other? Who knows, but it certainly isn't going to be solved in this thread. ;)

And for the record: I would not intentionally drive slower than the posted speed limit on a congested roadway unless there was a compelling reason to do so.

And that is all I am saying. Knowing this, it is silly to ask gsbrockman what speed and what gear he tows in....because it varies!....well, apparently it varies for most of us. I stated such and Snoking added his self imposed rule.....which applies to him, but not most folks, which is why it is a silly question to ask. I then mentioned I (me personally) will not drive slowly for no compelling reason....then others hopped onboard to explain why it is dangerous to go the speed limit.....but not dangerous to cause traffic to back up.

The illustration about the nationwide 55 mph speed limit disproves that. I'll wave as you go by, probably two or three times, on Hwy 6. I'll be in the white over driftwood duelly going 57 mph.

I underestimated how passionate people who own automatics would be about gears and speeds.

gearing is one of those subjects where you ask yourself when a difference makes no difference is there really a difference? I honestly don't care what other people think, my truck has a 410s, DRW's a 68 transmission and it does what I need it to do.. what else is there really? .. unless your ego requires you to be right and you have the emotional need to force everybody else bow at the altar of your knowledge and personal experience.. then and only then does the subject drone one and on

In all my years on TDR, I don't ever remember a thread going this far off from the original topic for so long.

Well, when you have comments? or claims perhaps? like this being slung around

It's very easy to see how things could run so far afoul. Unfortunate indeed.

Thanks for all of the information, I'm leaning towards a 3500 drw cc or mega cab with the cummins and aisin transmission with max tow package.

Not in a rush though, will do more research before I buy anything. Also have to find a flat bed trailer. There are several manufacturers near me.

Better Built, Econoline, Lone Wolf just to name a few. Not afraid to drive somewhere else to get one either.

If you think you are going to sleep in the back seat of a CC or MC, check out carefully the dimension requirements for it to be a legal bed under FMC rules. 75" bed length requirement makes it a non starter.
