Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Is this the time?

Moms 99 has 221,000 on the original. The original LP died at 185,000. Installed DD2's and a boost fooler at about 125,000. It has not been babied at all, spends most of the time with a horse trailer behind it. Or when I have it, bouncing around in the mountains.

I put the 3rd pump on tonight at 100,385 miles. The last one ran for 51,000 with the Banks and Power Puck stacked for the last 30K or so. I think I'm gonna go back to just the Banks until I find a Edge Comp. I need a new clutch, probably a SBC Con fe or ofe. I also need a different turbo, cause my egts climb really fast. Then I wanna put in some F1 1. 5 when I find some money!

Have 67000 miles and getting my second injection pump installed this week, on a stock truck. Oh yes, have replaced 4 lift pumps.

Gets discouraging.

100,000 miles and still chugging along. Replace LP at 80,000. Also installed a fuel pressure gauge. Nice to not be driving blind! Usually LP's go before VP44.

To all those who have thoughtfully responded here, I would like to add one more question. How often has the fuel filter/lift pump been changed during the life of the VP44? What may be a factor is just how many times the VP44 has been asked to bump n purge air through it during its service life? Is it a coincidence that the guy that never bothers with fuel filter/lift pump changes is the one that sees 200K and more on a pump? Hypotheticaly that is. As one recent post had sugested that a scored pump rotor bearing surface was the most common failure in the VP44, being from lack of lubericity in the fuel OR may be a few too many foam bubbles throught the . 0005 bearing/rotor friction spec. Wouldnt it be ironic if the guy who was anal about clean fuel filters happens to be the one with the numerous new IPs.

My 01. 5 has 98K on what looks like the original pump and I changed out the original lift pump about 3K ago. So Far So Good !

just rolled 350,000kms. original vp44. on lp #4. this is a 98. 5 and the early vp44 are not suppose to be as good as the later ones. truck is stock ,only have k&n and 4 in. exhaust. no power increases. use howes meaner in every tank.

Newer is better?

My 92 Dodge Cummins is close to 200,000 on the original lift pump and injector pump. In all those miles I have replaced the radiator and the Getrag transmission. It now needs a clutch, after plowing snow for 12 years. The truck has been stone cold dependable-towed trailers to Florida and back every year and gone everywhere without a second thought.

My 02 is a nice truck except I don't travel long distance without worry about some failure. Lift pump went and now the VP44 is throwing codes. The paint is thin and showing rust already. The power steering pump has been replaced as well as the steering box. The solenoids in the transmisson quit at about 54,000. The truck only has 58,000 now and I am looking for a buyer. The smartest thing I did was to not sell the 92!

207,xxx km's with no sign of issues, ran low mod's until I had the AirDog in though, would never go without supplementary fuel system, even on a stock truck, the factory l/p has proven to be of poor quality time and again, therefore replacement goes without saying, cost a bit more for aftermarket fuel system, but well worth the money in the long run.

Just to add to the above... I ALWAYS run fuel conditioner, Howes to be exact, cheap insurance for an expensive investment in my eyes, also prevents freeze up, ran it in my big rig at work all year, no problems in 40 below temps with fuel freeze up, good stuff.

BEST people to talk to.

Just in case you were looking, you are likely to have the best luck finding the proper solutions for your clutch and turbo issues at NADP as they have ran pretty much everything out there, and KNOW what works best, they have been amazing for me..... the best customer service I have ever experienced bar none, and all of the equipment they sell, they have ran on their own trucks to see if it would be any good, they actually KNOW what they are talking about. Check out their site www.nadp.ca or call 1 866 456 4498 toll free even! I guarantee you will be treated well. Good luck :D

Advance warnings, symptoms?

just proving a point here. just wanted to see how many VP 44 have died and how earliy they have died for whatever reason. Thank u, Reb

Reb,

Given that most of 24v truck owners have already wised-up and fitted some sort of early warning device, aka fuel pressure gauge in cab, to give us the heads-up on marginal fuel presssure conditons before we get into serious $$$ for either (3rd party and OEM) LiftPump and/or VP44 replacement, I was wondering if any other TDR members had received any other early-warning signs or indicators, or when things go "terminal" Do things go pear-shaped always very quickly or does it occur over an extended period of time?

I ask this, because I have recently experienced a "glitch" on my fuel delivery system and am now taking, retrospective (Pro- ;) ) active measures with my own truck, whilst I am living on borrowed time..... and looking over my shoulder
