IF you own a diesel and especially if you live in California... . beware... . CARB is looking at restrictions, for all diesel trucks... call em and write with your opinion.

Actually you are right. . I have several friends that have small construction companies. They own a couple of dump trucks etc and went to the public hearings in Sac. regarding regulation and smog retrofit of the large trucks. The CARB rep told the group "we dont care, you will comply".

I just thought that being flooded with calls may at least complicate their day. Its like every thing else though when every one just does nothing, thinking that it will do no good, we slowly lose. Everyone should be very concerned, these regulations will hurt every aftermarket mfg, shop, truck owner etc.

Smog retro fit kits are not cheap... ... ... ...

Sooner or later its gonna effect all diesels including ours, its only a matter of time, only thing we can do is move out of state. Dosent seem like to bad an idea at times.....

Can't blame CARB, blame the manufacturers. I saw their ad on TV the other night; a big semi truck crossing the desert. The air in front of the truck was dull dingy with pollution. The truck's wake was a clean, clear and bright scene. When the ads say they can clean the air with diesel trucks, someone is going to call you on it. CARB did. Ads like that convinced CARB board that the manufacturers are capable of making clean running diesel trucks.

Now, my question; with NAFTA allowing Mexican trucking companies into California, and elsewhere, will they be under the same restrictions as US registered trucks? I would bet not. The new CARB rules state that any truck even entering California has to comply. If you be thinking to move out of state, remember you won't be able to drive across the boarder to even visit.

Also, I would expect that Federal rules won't be far behind California in this regard. They have followed that lead all along so far.

If you look at Obama's Environmental plans and the person he has selected to run the EPA it will most certanily happen,it is just amatter of time. #@$%!:

just what do you think is going to happen? They're not going to require retrofits! LOL

again, many states have diesel smog testing... many members on this site are in those states. they've been dealing with it for years.

CARB does indeed require retrofits. No one will be grandfathered. The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has proposed a rule that would require operators of existing on-road diesel vehicles, primarily private medium and heavy-duty trucks, meet very stringent emission standards. Basically, the rule applies to any vehicle that is diesel powered, used in California for commercial purposes, licensed and used on-road, or originally designed for on-road use, and has a gross vehicle weight rating of more than 14,000 lbs. Exceptions are:

Solid waste collection vehicles

Public agency and utility fleets until December 31, 2017

Transit buses

Cargo handling equipment at ports and intermodal rail facilities

Off-Road Vehicles

Military tactical support vehicles

Emergency vehicles

Motor homes for private use

Dedicated snow removal vehicles

Here's the schedule:

What do you mean they will not require retrofits?????????????????? They are doing it NOW. . I have a friend who has 13 trucks, 22 grand a piece to retofit with some stupid exhaust filter after burner thing that dropped his milage. why would they not require it on a PU????

Maybe not on joe citizen for now... ... . but what about Joe the plumber who runs a diesel pu????

I have a 96 1 ton that I use for work. I can see that because I have CA ##'s and a weight tag they will be after me. POINT is... . we all... ... no matter what state or what type of diesel we/us own better plan on spending some money on a retro kit or a use permit etc UNLESS we ALL unite and buck this bull@#$.

Remember that these stupid save the world ideas by the bug huggers are deeper than just a retrofit kit... what about the expence thats passed on to all of us?? What about the smoke cops stopping and detaining a person without probable cause to open your door/ hood to inspect your truck????

If we ALLLLL dont do something everyone in all states with any truck will be affected!!!!

Sorry solid waste vehicles already got hit... . go to the Keifer land fill in Sacramento and watch the line of garbage trucks get inspected one by one... . they all have to have the exhaust retro kit and stickers etc. sticker missing 350$ fine, truck idles for more than 5 minutes fine, etc... .

they have to MEET EMISSION STANDARDS...

you don't have to add a $20k urea injection system and a DPF... the factory emissions equipment that was on the vehicle when new will be sufficient to meet the emission standards if the vehicle is tuned properly.

again... many states have emissions testing for diesels... you guys are freaking out because you've never had any inspection on diesel vehicles.

the sky IS falling, but it's not landing on diesel emissions testing in CA! LOL

Acording to california all PU are commercial vehicles. That why we all pay wieght fees. Isn't the peoples republic of california just great. #@$%!

Not starting a pissen match but YES 20 K $$$ retrofit systems ARE NOW required to be installed on trucks. . TRucks that were emission legal 2-3 years ago. SO like I said joe the plumber with a 1 ton flat bed with weight stickers of say 15-20 K will not/ can not be required to be retro fit???????????? news flash they are proposing this NOW. I am not talking about an inspection I am talking about a huge financial impact on everyone having to purchase some BS kit...

I am not refering to "weight fees" I am referring to declared weight tags that are required on any truck needing CA #'s/ motor carrier permit. Any truck that has a 10K gvw or higher IE: dodge ford with any thing other than a reglular truck bed needs these #'s and permits. these weight tags are available in 10,15,20 lb designations. The declared weight must be the total weight of vehicle and trailer. 15 K tags added about 450$$ to my yearly renewal (350$$)

You miss the point entirely.

The standards are changing and existing trucks have to meet them. It's not the original standards at the time the vehicle was first sold; it's the NEW standard that reduces the current emissions by 90%. My truck meets the emissions that were in force the day it was sold. It does not meet the new required emissions standards and must either be retrofitted or removed from the road. I know, you don't believe this could possibly be true. IT IS THOUGH.

can someone please link me to the article outlining the whole deal?

I know Cali has some wack laws... my buddy's company doesn't run flatbeds because they'd get harassed in Cali when they're delivering trailers. and can't you just put a camper shell on and register as a private motor home?
