We all had to learn somehow, asking questions just accelrates the learning curve.

Feed tubes by rights should be replaced with injectors but not always a need to deal. As long as the tips aren't messed up and they clean up with some scotch brite or fine sand paper the only thing you really need to worry about is splitting under pressure or the edge filters in them plugging. If you split one you will have a no start, it won't build enough rail pressure to ever fire the engine. The ECU needs to see around 3000 psi to even fire the injectors. If you don't have a long crank start the feeds tubes are likely not the problem.

Some basic tools and the job is not that bad, an over engine creeper is a real bonus when working on these trucks and th erest is just basic hand tools and a TQ wrench. The deal is if you tear it down to the point you need to check TQ on the tubes, remove the injector line, back the tube nut off, remove the exhaust rocker, loosen then tighten the injector in the correct sequence you are most of the way there to pull the injectors.

I would get a contribution test done then proceed form there. You might see one that is obvious and needs some attention and that could be the only one. Depends on whether you want the experience and practice and have the time.

ok that makes since do you know if a snap-on scan tool will do this i thank i know a guy that has one he paid big money for last year i will check back tommorow its time for bed thanks

If he has the Dodge module for it the Solus should do all the functions. Not positive but it sounds reasonable.

well just pulled the injectors out and took them in to be tested, they all tested good so back to the drawing board diesel injection said they were right where they should be on pop pressure and return flow also the coils were good. So any new ideas why the thing rolls over so hard then smells like fuel when it starts i am at a complete loss with this thing

The white smoke and fuel smell is becasue the injectors are leaking down into the cylinder when it sits for a period of time. Trying to find that particular issue on a CR injector is not easy. They may all pop correctly and flow the right amount and still leak over time. If your mileage is good then drive it or replace them all with new.

The hard crank is likely in the starter or starter gear, not much else it can be. Anything that would cause a catch in the cranking should show as other issues when running.

Thanks again for the help I did notice a couple rockers were not as tight as the others and apparently one of the caps that ride on the valve bridge had fallen off when the shop put it together last time I found it laying in the head luckily so mabey that has something to do with it but I bought a hole new rocker from Cummins and plan on putting the thing back together this weekend with new feed tubes which were also knocked up on the tips and you could see debrees in the screen with a good light. THINK I will never go to that shop again and probably should seek some legal advice but that's not how I am.....................

Yep, you listed enough problems there to throw the whole thing into mess running. It is a wonder it started well at all.

Thank you for your help I just finished the job last night and WOW what a difference the thing has never been so quiet and smooth at idle no more shaking 4x4 shifter. It also seems to have a lot more power and response. Still need to get the starter rebuilt though it still cranks over hard after it cools down but no more smoke when it starts. Now hopefully the mpgs come back. Can't believe I found so much wrong and it still ran just goes to show these things can take a beating and keep getting the job done. Now I know why these engines go a million miles bit anyway I just wanted to say thanks for the advice and help you were great...

Yep, they will run totally messed up. They don't neccessarily run right or efficient but that is sometimes hard to tell if one doesn't know any different. So many trucks I can hear the fact the injectors are worn out and chattering but as long as they start and the mileage is not totally garbage the drivers don't have any idea there is a problem. The first sign there is a major problem is when it melts a piston or fills the crank case with diesel. Invariably the results of letting several little issues go end with one big expensive one.

Glad you got it worked out and fixed.
