Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Fuel shut off soleniod

I was driving back home and my truck died along the highway. It would start again and run for a second and die again. I figured out it was the fuel soleniod so I wired it up and was able to get home,but the transmission would not shift out of second, the speedo and tach did not work and the voltage meter was showing a discharge. Is this normal or do I have a short somewhere ? I have a 95 automatic.

There is an ignition switch recall that applies to '95s. If that has not been done to yours then that may be the problem.

I do not know if the switch was changed or notas I bought the truck used, but why would the truck start again if the ignition switch was bad ? I'll call Dodge and see what they say. Thanks

The recall was because there was too much stuff directly on the ignition switch. If the switch was ok, then they installed a relay for the heater blower. If it was not ok then the switch was replaced and the relay added. Yours may have a bad contact that does not make a good connection all the time.



The dealer should be able to run your VIN on their computer system to find out if the recall included your truck and if it was done.



If that is not the problem then you are going to have to do some trouble shooting.

Well the dealer told me I had that ignition switch problem fixed in 2000 so it must be something else. The dealer also told me the tach, speedo and transmission are tied together on the same circut but could not explain the battery discharge.

Before you buy any parts, try this.

Clean these sensors:

1. Throttle position sensor (on injection pump)

2. Transmission temperature sensor (on transmission)

3. Engine speed sensor [front of engine]

4. Vehicle speed sensor {rear of transmissin}

Use a electronic contact cleaner and the use some dielectric grease on pins and put back together.

The reason that it shows a discharge,{going out on a limb here} is that the pcm is telling alt. that the engine is not running.

Also, check pin #4 on the powertrain control module (right side of dash pane) all the sensors use it as a ground.

I am looking at my 95 manual and there are 8 pages of electrical diagrams just on fuel/ignition for diesel.

I hope you find your problem and be sure to post the fix for us.

Look at the sensors especially Crabman's post about number 3 the engine/crank sensor. The PCM needs a signal from this sensor to turn on. If the signal from this sensor is not received at the PCM, then no charging system, speedo, tach and a/c. Had a bad connection there once and it drove me crazy until it was corrected. Good Luck.

The above is all good advice. while checking the timeing sensor check the connection of this wire on top of the engine right behind the fan hub, in this area. this has also been known to give a problem.

I pulled the speed sensor and cleaned the outside off, I hope that is all that there is to it. Might just buy a new one if that does not get it going as the dealer says thats what he thinks it is. Anyway to test this with out going to the dealer ?

Sure, swap one from a similar truck that the tach and speedo work.

Be sure you get the measurement correct in there, about . 52" thous between the dampener and the sensor.

While recalls are being mentioned- how long do you have to get a recall fix done? I mean is there a time limit that you have to get the work done? I am the third owner of a 96 and have gotten 2 recall notices but haven't gotten the time to take it in, it's been 2 years. Should I forget about it or can I still get it done? Thanks

You can still get it done. Don't wait till you have bigger problems

The engine speed sensor (crank speed senors) has something to do with all your symptoms.



You need to look at the engine speed senor connector and wires (especially the connector- clean and make sure no pins are loose or bent).



The engine speed senor has been known make the engine stall out.

Not on a '95. The only electrical thing that has anything to do with it running is the hold coil on the fuel solenoid. It's connected to the ignition on circuit, not to the PCM.

Thank you all. I am up and running and the problem was the engine speed sensor in the front of the motor (it was no good).

unplug the fuel soleniod, wiring it up will make it run but if its no good it could be drawing or shorting out. Its worth a try should only take about 10 secs.
