Hey folks,

The 518 in my 91. 5 W250 exploded on me on my way to work a few weeks ago.

I bought a 89 W350 Dually with the Getrag and I'm going to swap the parts over for the 5 speed.

The truck runs and shifts great. No grinding, no popping out of gear.

However, when I swap the transmission over, I want to make sure I do 'the little things' right.

I've heard about swapping the bushing for a bearing, but not sure how involved and costly that is vs. just getting a new bushing.

Should I replace the TOB, even if I use the used clutch?

Any seals that I should just replace and get it over with?

I'm thinking, since the rest of the truck is full of Amsoil, that I'll run Amsoil 5w30 in it, and fill it a quart over. Good idea?

Thanks! Any advice I can get would be very helpful.

Did this conversion 6 months ago. Pretty strait forward.

You will need the getrag as well as the getrag NP205. Will also need all of the clutch hydraulics and pedals (that was the hardest part of the install). Will also need the 90 deg coolant block/elbow if you plan on removing the trans coolant lines from the engine. This is the piece that y's at the bottom of the oil filter area that allows coolant to go through the tank on the side of the block.

In a nutshell, remove all of the auto stuff. Install new flywheel with new bushing or bearing. Would recommend new clutch if you can swing it but you do not have to. I am always a fan of now pulling the trans out again in a year if a TOB, bushing, or clutch fails. (NOTE: I ordered a new clutch, minus flywheel (re-surfaced it) from South bend and I was like $300 or something in that ball park - well worth it for peace of mind. )

Would recommend getting new trans to crossmember bushings as the old ones may fall apart on removal. They are a donut style.

Will also need a new trans to t case gasket. They are like $4. 00 from dodge or you can cut your own. May also want to do any leaking T case seals while it is out of the truck. I had many on mine I needed to do.

Be sure to get new trans fluid and t case fluid. I put amsoil synthetic motor oil in. Believe it was 10W30???

If the gear ratios are different in the two vehicles you will need to swap the speedo gear out to the correct t case.

Will also need to remove the little no start link up behind the dash. It is a little green plug with a loop wire. This will be the issue on why your truck wont start after installing everything! Dont ask why I know! :D

Dont forget to pull the old gear selector off the steering columb. Looks funny otherwise! ;)

Hope that helps!

Robert, thanks for the info... very helpful indeed... worth the price of admission, that's for sure!

On the no start green plug loop dealy... how did you bypass it?

Thanks!

Two of each will be needed. You will find the lowers are near flat and the uppers pretty beat up.

As for the loop, just unplug it and plug it into the female side that will be taped to the wiring bundle somewhere in that area. That is if my memory serves. Did that at like 2 am after having to pull out the clutch as I installed the disk backwards... . I hope that is a hint to others. Look VERY carefully for the side marked front. It is VERY small lettering! ;)

Just reading through the site and ran across my old thread. How young and naive I was at the time. ;)

Love the Getrag, although chasing a driveline vibration means I've ripped it out again 3 times... but I have faith the 4th will be the last... for a while. ;)

Love mine! Just did a 7500 mile round trip with a 12K lbs trailer and I loved shifting my own gears! NO regrets from this swap.

Granted, will see what I say when I get more miles on the transmission with the 800 ft/lbs... . ;)

Wantin to do this swap in my dads 92 soon but with a nv 4500 instead. any place good to get adapters n keep the 205 t-case? What about the pedals? anybody have a set they'd sell r know if sum out of a second gen trk will work? Thanks, Ben
