I am thinking of getting a CB radio for my 06. all i know about CB radios is they have large wip antennas. what is a good, high quality CB (not some radio shack pile) with a good antenna set up? what do you guys run? price is not a problem. i want the good stuff... ... ..... but not space shuttle type stuff...

The first and most important step is the antenna system. That means antenna(s), mount(s), and coax.

The best radio in the world won't work well with a crappy antenna system. A very inexpensive radio may easily outperform it, if it's connected to a good antenna system.

You can get some very good technical help here: Tech-Docs Index

Whether or not you use Firestik's procucts (I am right now. ), their technical advice is very good.

Don't get hung up on too many of the bells & whistles some CB radios have. Most of them actually add little, if any, real value.

Bought my stuff from CB Radios including Motorcycle Intercom Systems

I bought the Cobra 29 w/weather. Some of the metal antennas won't work with weather if that's important to you. Where I go offroad knowing the latest weather report is great. The latest Uniden's are made by Cobra. The Uniden's have different backlight.

By the way, I had a Cobra 75 in my 96'. Hated that radio.

Check out Radio Active Radios on line and give them a call.

Great guys and they will fix you up with what you need.

Hope this helps, Andy

i second the vote for giving mike over at radioactive a shout. http://www.radioactiveradios.com/contactus.html

i have 2 from him, and am looking to get another.

figure out what your goals are in advace! you just want good enough for convoys, talk 5-10 miles, 40-60, more? am only? or do you want the option of sideband?

if you want a forum to get other recomendations, referals, or just read up. The CB Radio Talk Forum :: Index is awesome.

my dayly driver setup is a galaxy DX-95t2 radio that mike hase tuned up, some of the good coax from him, and a 102" whip.

nice lookin set up! ya, all i plan on it having a nice high quality CB for talking in the 20-30 range maybe... ... ... an weather would be nice. i hear good things about fire sticks, anyone got one ?

Gus, why did you replace the Gen Lee with the Galaxy ?

..... I like those wheels on your truck - I can't make out on the sig what they are ?

A good combination for a "CB" is a Cobra 29 or Uniden PC78 with a Wilson 1000 or Wilson 5000 on the roof... this would be a good "legal" setup, if you're concerned with that... 4 watts is the "maximum" legal output...

A good basic "Export" would be a Connex 3300HP or General Lee (50 watt range), or a Connex 4600 or the above mentioned galaxy 95T2 (200 watt range)...

Or you could use the Cobra 29 with a linear...

But keep in mind the latter things are illegal... but rarely enforced. Just an FYI...

Personally, I run a Connex 4600...

On the big truck, I run a Magnum S6. Had I waited 3 weeks, I could've gotten the S680 for the same money. Didn't know it was coming out at the time I bought mine. The stock mic picked up to much noise, so I got an Astatic 636L. Pair of 4' Super Flex K40 antennas on the mirrors. Works great.

On the Ram, I have a Cobra 29 with a Superstar DM452 power mic w/echo. Gonna replace the cheap 3' Barjan antenna with another 4' K40 SF. Antenna is mounted in the center of the headache rack, up top.

no side band on the general lee.

the wheels are from amp offroad. les schwab's in house brand.

Gus if that was ice that took out your coil spring you need a bigger amp.

if i had ice on it and keyed up, id need another amp...

i polished the 102, then coated it to prevent ice buildup. i also make sure i brush the snow off the mount first... just a littl preventitive maintanace. .

Gus that was my attempt to be funny. Thats some serious ice to take out that spring. We are happy with a Cobra 25 with weather and twin 6' Fire Sticks we put on my boys truck last year. Like said above the ant. is the most important in quality and tuned properly (swr). I have always put mine in the center of the roof. I use to run the Avanti 6' Hippo but they have been gone awhile now. Wilson like said above is making a quality ant. . Im from the old school :Tram D201,Yaseu FT102,mobil President 2510,Sweet 1600,Icom 24AT 2m/70cm,Kenwood 2m

I actually think he got it caught in a drive-through overhang IIRC...

I'm considering trying a 102 (again) in place of my Wilson 5000... just need to take the time to do it...
