Help!

Truck is a 92 W250 auto with 134k on the odo.

It is my wifes daily driver and yesterday I get a call that it died on here and she needs a tow. So we tow it home with the '01.

She said on the morning drive about a mile before work, it kinda shuddered briefly, then ran fine as usual. After work, it started fine but then just died as is someone had turned off the engine. As she was coasting off the road she got it to fire a little, but only for a second or two. It made no unusual noises when it died.

After towing it home, I replaced the fuel filter. I cracked the low pressure bleed after the filter and there is fuel there. I cracked an injector line and there is some fuel there, but not what I would expect. With a brief squirt in the intake, the engine will run for a second with no unusual noises. When cranking the engine with the starter, it seems to spin faster than normal and makes no attempt at starting.

What should I be looking for and testing at this point? I am no diesel mechanic but I can muddle my way through anything I choose to tackle.

Thanks!!

Take the wire off of the fuel solonoid, turn the key to run, then touch the terminal. You should hear a click. If not make sure it has voltage. Sometimes it just gets corroded. If it works and still will not run, pull it out and see if you have metal particles on the tip. That indicates pump failure.

You should get enough fuel from 1/4 turn of the injector line to hit the bottom of the hood easily, or hit the top of the windshield if #6 injector. The pump could be fried- TDR member jaynes had a similar ocurence a few weeks ago. It just died at a light. He got it going again, enough to get it off the road, but that was about as far as he got. Couple springs in the pump, and a few other little things, and they got him going again.

Take the solenoid out (I THINK a 24mm wrench or shallow socket), and take out the spring and stopper. Put the top back on (less the guts), and it should start. If not, I'd say a pump failure. How much water was in the fuel? if any. The lack of spray from the injector line concerns me... .....

Thanks guys!! I check the fuel shutoff selenoid later when I have the chance. That would be much nicer than having to replace the injector pump. My fingers are crossed!

FIRST, check the two connections to the solenoid, I mean make sure they're on there TIGHT! If not, cut that wire and put new spades on. I can't tell you the aggravation those have caused me and every mechanic that tried to diagnose. Second, I had a new set of reman Bosch injectors installed. and one hung open at 10,000 miles ( a very sudden event). The one injector youdescribe as not making pressure ( just dribbling or foaming fuel, as opposed to a solid, powerful spray) is likely the culprit. Startyour engine, crack each injector one at a time (11/16?), and when the engine starts to die, it means the injector is GOOD. If the engine beat doesent change, VOILA, bad injector located. Try these easy remedies first; you'll need a special 15/16 wrench to get the solenoid off to check for particles.

one thing i can say (i have no experence with diesels) but with any engen fast spin = no fuel usally. both my internation lowboys would spin really fast then die (6 volts just don't hold up) check the fuel was the first thing i did.

OK, went out to check out the fuel stop selenoid. Saw two terminals... . only one wire... . yep, the other had fell off. Hooked'er back up and she started instantly. Alls well that ends well!

Thanks again to all that responded, it was your great advice that made it an easy diagnose.
