I am in progress of doing something similar with Acura TL projectors. This is a great source of info. Thank you for all the pics Jkloppe. BTW I saw the exact post on hidplanet.com A LOT of great info there if people are interested in retro-fitting HID projectors in in their stock halogen head lamps.

Is there a single headlight connector that you spliced into with your resistors? I bought a wiring harness so hopefully i shouldn't have the problem with the "Lamp Out" light. But it only has 1 9007 connector to plug into.
 
My truck is a little different because it is a 04 which has a FCM and a Boss plow wiring harness on. I did a lot of testing to get the right resistance just to keep the light off. With a FCM it knows if high or low is out on either side. Make sure if the lamp out is on do not run the lights.



Try the harness out first before you start, the ballasts do not need to be plugged in, see if the light says off. It is very important that the resistors can conduct heat to a large surface for cooling.



I will stay tuned to answer more questions.

What would happen if I ran a aftermarket light with the lamp out lit, what is different on the 05 than the 04?
 
my truck is an 06 and i needed the bi so i also went with the tl. as stated the mount has to be adjustable and for me that was the hardest part to fabricate, i wish i would have researched it like you did before i started

I wouuld like to see it, do you have any pics of the retro?



Woodchuck: The "forward contorl module (FCM)" was replaced by a different controller in the newer trucks I think it was late 05. Once the lamp out is on the voltage pulses between I think it was 5-10 volts. This is very hard on ballasts.

Could you just have drilled holes in the reflector bowl and mounted it that way?. I'm interested in seeing pics too. The more the better!

What did you use to cover the hole on the back of the housing from where the projector went in?. I purchased a harness that gets power from the battery directly so it kinda bypasses the FCM. It does use one connector from one of the headligts, probably juse so that the fcm sees proper resistance just to keep the "lamp out" light off

It might be ok with your harness, it depends on what the minuum switching voltage of the coil is. Home depot parts for the back, pics on page one.
 
the led for turn and clearance is visible in the right, the solenoid for the high beam is visible at the bottom of the projector. it has a very sharp cutoff, i got to see the lexus and i think i would like it a little better. i chose not to use resistors and went a different route with my wiring
 
hid lighting

lets try for two, the top switch is for high beam solenoid, i have it connected in parallel with the high beam switch on the truck , isolated with diodes on each, the orange turns on the hid from a fused full time hot , a second fuse off of the light side of this switch supplies power to the blue switch. this prevents the solenoid from being activated with out the lights being on. the next switch activates the hid lights in the fog lights, these lights were left over from my first try at installing the hid's the last switch is for additional back up lights, this gives me any combination i want with or with out the motor running, i had to remove and replace the front lense to install the projectors i tried to figure out a way to mount it from the back and could not come up with any thing. it's to embarssing to tell you how much time and cost it was on the first 06. my second one was only about $800 and 30 hour labor but i am happy with it. i changed all lights to led's they are all brighter than the oem

That is definetely impressive! Seems a little too complex for me. I just want to turn on my head lights and have my lights work. If worst comes to worst and I have no other option, I will probably buy a canceller kit to take care of the "lamp out" light. If it really does mess with the voltage feeding the ballasts, hopefully that will fix it.



The led's in the rear lights def look nice! Great work
 
+ you have to be careful in getting caught up in the "more is better" mode. Over driving the headlamps reflector (optical design) doesn't always work.

I used those HIR's in my wife's PT Cruiser in the high location with decent results, when we sold the PT and bought a Charger. . I put them in the Charger but was very disappointed. It scatted the high beams so bad they just looked completely out of focus even after checking the aim. Same bulbs different bucket, the Chargers bucket couldn't handle it.



What happens is the optics become over-saturated from too much lumen output and cant control the added light output from the bulb. Sort of like over-driving a speaker with too much power and the clarity goes down hill while you get more noise. The headlamp looks brighter and it is but the beam becomes out of focus scattering the light.
