Has anyone modifided their shift lever? I know on the '05 it is a solid shaft and I was wondering if it could be bent or would it break? I would like mine to sit about a inch forward and about a inch to the left. Just one of other crazy things racing through my mind. Oo.

Which transmission do you have? If it's the NV5600, Geno's sells the BD short shift kit which IIRC does reposition the stick for better comfort, if you don't want to risk bending.

Just a thought...

A solid steel shift lever is easy to bend. Heat it with a torch in the area you want to bend until it is cherry red for about 2 inches. Hold the rod with a pipe wrench or channel locks below the heated area and bend it where you want it. Let it cool, sand a little and re-paint it.

This has been covered several times... . I think if you search you will find better results. . I think there is a guy on here named tommygun that sells a kit and a pretty cool lookin srt 10 shifter for the nv 5600, and g56's. I also know that several ppl have bent theirs to their liking... . Hope this helps. . Wes

I like mine from Tommygun. This is in 6th gear...

There is also a guy in the Seattle area (Jesse) that makes a modified shifter at a reasonable price. Several guys on this site have purchased from him, including me. It comes powder coated in either silver or black. I don't know his number but I'm sure someone here does.

CSilkowski,

Isn't that the "Whiplash Shifter"?

I put 2 bends in my shifter to bring it a bit closer to the driver. It worked well.

I scotch taped two pieses of letter sized typing paper together & made a 'life-sized' drawing of the stock shifter & the modified shifter with the bends, on it. Took the shift lever to a tube bending shop & had them do the bending. I figured having someone that bends tubing for a living would insure a sucessful outcome. And it did.

One thing I would recommend is marking the shift lever before removing it so that you know the relationship of the lever when it's in it's tightened position. That way, the bender will know which way to place the bends (which side of the lever is up on the drawing).

Also, be prepared to remove the black coating as it will probably pop off when the tube is bent. I sandblasted the powdercoating off & repainted it silver.

My lever (NV-5600) appears to be hollow.

When designing the bends, keep in mind that moving the lever to the left may interfere with the ashtray, when open, & going into first gear. I designed mine to just miss the open ashtray.

All in all, I'm very happy with the outcome. Glad I did it. I'm kind of 'vertically challenged' & the bends place the shifter just a bit closer, & more comfortable, for me.

I also installed a shift knob from an older Chevy pick-up (SoCal Hotrod Shops). I always liked the shape & looks of those old shiftknobs. My Grandfather had one on an old Dodge from the 'fifties'. Had to 'chase' the threads with a threading tool to get it to fit but, it works great & I'm very happy with the results.

Buffalo - Yes, that is the Whiplash. Sounds like you accomplished about the same thing for probably less $.

Csilkowshi, that sounds like what I am looking for. Hopefully someone on here can get me a name and number. Pictures would be great too.

Thanks for the help.

CSilkowski,

To be honest, with you, that's where I got the idea. Whiplash deserves the credit for the idea, though.

I, also, believe that he powdercoats the lever. I painted mine but, think the powdercoating would be better. Was going to chrome plate mine but, couldn't find a shop, in Phoenix, that would do it, quickly. The shops I talked to wanted a lot of time for the plating. I would have been without the truck without the lever.

CHall - I found this post which includes Jesse's number... Good luck.

Q:What is the easiet and least exspensive way to modify your truck and change the character of it in 5 minutes or less?

A: Install a Whiplash shifter. "I called for the shifter yesterday and beeged and pleaded for jesse to ship it out so i gcould get it in my Grubby lttle hands today. Took More time to put away my tools then it did to install the shifter. Man what a difference. The shifter moves over towards the drivers side and makes it alot more comfy to shift

Whiplash shifter made me go WOW sorta the same way and Edge EZ makes you go wow when you first hook it up and test drive it if you are interested in one Call Jesse at 253-850-9422

I am not affiliated, just a very very happy customer. Gonna upload some images to my gallery tonight so if anyone is interested in seeing pics
