Great caliber but be preparred for sticker shock when you buy ammo. Unless he has a good job or a dad with a good job or some LE friends that use the 10mm round he's gonna find that it's expensive to shoot.

I own a 10mm Smith and lucky for me I haven't had to buy the pricey stuff yet. Good luck.

Jon

I also have a glock 20 An a Colt Delta elite 10mm,They're very good handguns But they definitely have a strong kick to them . You'll need to Fire all lot of rounds Just to get used to the kick. as far as it being expensive round to purchase ,It's pretty cheap if you reload your own ammunition :D

i love the 10 mm and as stated if you reload it is very cheap because it uses the same components as the 40 i have a very strong preference of the 1911 over the glock because with a trigger job on a 1911 you can get a 1 1/2 lb trigger pull and for hunting or target shooting this makes a huge difference. i have carried a 1911 in 10 mm or 45 for the last 40 years cocked and locked, a used delta elete is about $800 a new kimber is easer to get a hold of

The best shooting pistol I ever owned was a Colt Delta Elite. I wish I still had that one. I had it before S&W came out with the . 40 and I was handloading my ammo. I had actually developed a "light" 10mm round very similar to the modern . 40 about the time it came out. It was a sweet shooter. It would be really nice if you could shoot the . 40 ammo in the 10mm pistols. I tried a Glock 20 but it was just too much of a handful for me. It's a BIG grip and too large for a CCW in my opinion.

cool round and some fun stuff comes up when researching it, when i was glock shopping i either wanted a 10 or a 357 sig, i ended up with the 357 and that is a rather amusing round if you want some horsepower with a smaller grip, reloading is not a big deal with it either but make sure you have a strong crimp

gun info

I spent 27 years with the best state police agency in the country. So you know i have some experience. 1st, you have to decide what you want the weapon for, I'am thinking you want it for self defense. If that's the case, I recommend the good ol cold 45, 1911. Either buy it spiced up or have a good gunsmith do it for you. It has the best reliability i know of, and a lot of knock down power. You don't need any more than this unless you just want braging rights. That's just my opinion.

I agree on the . 45 auto 1911. That said, if you're set on a 10mm then my vote would be for a Kimber. I really like the Delta Elite, but the used ones that you can find tend to be about the same price as a new Kimber.

If you reload then you can load up some lower powered ammo and work up to the recoil of full power ammo. For example my . 45 plinking ammo is a 200 grain SWC at about 800 fps, but my full power ammo is a 230 grain bullet (either FMJ or JHP) at about 900 - 950 fps. If you don't reload, I think a lot of commerically loaded 10mm ammo is already downloaded to . 40 S&W performance anyhow.

The Glock 20 is good, It will have some recoil. The neat part is you can get different barrles in 40sw, 357sig and the real monster is the 9x25 Dillon. The 9x25 pushes a 9mm bullet at close to 2000fps. I have a couple of g20's and at one time I had a Delta, I think the g20 recoils less than the same loads in the Delta. The g20 seems to sit lower in my hand so the recoil seems less. Have fun.

The slide sits lower on a Glock than a 1911 variant, so the recoil is noticed more as a push rather than a flip, which gives the perception of less felt recoil...

Another reason they're more accurate, but we won't go there today... :-laf

The 20SF is a great frame, as is the 29. . quite the pocket cannon.

I love the 10mm...

I have been looking for a good used G20 for a while also, I want it for hunting and a 45 auto isn't a legal hunting round in the state of ND as it isn't long enough = not enough knock down power for game.

The 10mm is a great round. I have a Glock 29. Thou its a much better woods round than a personal defense round.

When I look at rounds I think about knockdown or killing power.

Knockdown power is simply the energy transfer from the bullet to the object being shot.

Killing power is the damage potential to the object.

A 10mm has killing power, it is powerful and will deeply penetrate and do lots of damage. This is good for animal with thick hides, large bones, etc. . Its not the best for people because we are very thin skinned and a 10mm will likely go clean thru the person. While this does lots of damage there is not nearly as much energy transfer. The only energy lost was the energy required to break thru the skin, organs, or any bones.

A . 45ACP has knockdown power, its a slow moving heavy slug that will generally stop in its target very quickly. This isn't as good on say a bear, but great on a person. Every last ft/lb of energy is dispelled into the person, this stops them much faster than a large hole...

So. . if your purely looking for a personal defense gun against people I would look at a . 45ACP or a 40 S&W. If you want the most power in a conventional auto pistol get a 10mm.

I have both a 10mm and a . 45ACP. They are both great guns. The 10mm is my truck gun as I am more likely to encounter something other than a person and the . 45ACP is my house gun as I don't expect a bear to break into my house.

The 10mm is also quite large to conceal, so I carry a Kel-Tec . 380 when I need something concealable.

SA XD 45 cal

This is my first post on this forum. I just purchased a Springfield Arms DX . 45 cal. Two 13 round magazines, holster for weapon and also twin magazine holster and a lockable plastic case. Took it out to the range last Saturday using FMJ 235 Grain rounds. Took about 20 rounds to get the feel of it but WOW... was I ever impressed. Very accurate, good feel to the grips and well balanced loaded, smooth trigger pull, minimal recoil, very consistent impact points and easily regained sight picture. I am extremely pleased. Features that impress me are the sights, round in chamber indicator and striker pin indicator are both visible and palpable so that even in total darkness you know there is a round chambered and the weapon is cocked. Trigger and grip safety and internal safety mechanisms make the weapon ultra safe in my opinion. No fumbling with an external manual safety. Cost was $530 with my military discount. Not too shabby at all for a weapon made in Croatia. I was going to buy a Glock but kept coming back to the SA XD. I searched this forum for other XD 45 owners and could not really find anything. I would like some feedback from other XD owners or opinions of some of the shooters online here. Thanks! MAJ D

My personal preference is for the . 45. It starts out 10% greater diameter than the 10mm. 10% greater diameter is about 20% greater area. I realize the 10mm has more energy and will probably penetrate deeper, but I don't think FBI and police statistics show the 10mm to be more effective than the . 45. I think this is just a different way of saying what AH64ID already said.

If you just want lots of muzzle energy in an automatic pistol, consider a Wildey. I love mine and the recoil is very controllable. It is a bit large for routine carry.

Like Sngleshot, was looking at a Glock (21). I have a friend who has a Glock 9mm (wuss :)). He is very happy with it. Then I looked at a Springfield Armory XD 45. I bought the XD 45 and don't regret it. I don't know that the Springfield Armory is any better than the Glock, but I don't think the Glock is any better than the Springfield either. I suggest you get whichever has the best price, which I expect to be the Springfield.

Dave, Wow! Thanks for that link to the Wildley. Never even heard of it before but then I am kinda new to shooting personal handguns. That is one amazing weapon! The intimidation factor would be enough to change someone's mind right quick! :-laf All my military experience was with the 1911 and when we (Army) went to the 9mm ... I really realized the huge difference. One big reason why I wanted to stay with the 45 caliber for my PD weapon. I just purchased some CorDon 45+P200gr JHP's. They are a lot faster than the 235gr FMJ's I was breakin in with. I plan on keeping one mag with these loaded for PD carry. Thanks again for the link. MAJ D

I have both 45 and 10 mm Colt 1911s, the 10 mm is a Delta Elite Gold Cup and have been happy with both. The 10 mm does have more recoil and depending on the load can make it better or worse. I have replaced the recoil spring with a 24# spring along with recoil buffers makes a big difference. I shoot eaither with the same level of accuracy. I like the safey features of the 1911 versises others and like better than my Wife's Glock but get what you want and can shoot well.

but get what you want and can shoot well.

Thats the best advise. My wife has Glock 23 and really likes the feel of it, but can't shoot it very accurately. She is very accurate with our much cheaper S&W Sigma in . 40... . guess which one she carries.

I've always thought of getting a 10mm, but I cant justify the extra recoil for my uses.

I dont have any large furry animal here, so for paper punching and PD the 4 works for me.

Besides concealing a full size 1911 I would think is easy compared to the large size glock.

Oh BTW, I wouldnt go with handloads for PD ammo... ... . :-{}

Had the small Glock 9mm ( mod 26 ? ) for a long time, not as much fun to target shoot with that three and a half day trigger pull. Got a S&W M&P in . 40, this is a fun gun, more recoil, but I shoot it better. Almost as small as that Glock, and 200 grain HP is a fair chunk of lead. A . 45 is alot to carry concealed, but that's just me. You got to go with what you like.

I dont know if you are really stuck on a Glock I would definitely spend some time shopping there are a lot of options out there. One option if you are a 1911 fan is Para Ordnance they make some nice firearms and their prices are reasonable. They just came out with a new model the GI expert which is around $600 and priced very well for what you get. Also if you are really stuck on a glock and want one with some real thump check out guncrafter industries they sell a top end to the Glock 20 and 21s that convert it up to a new caliber called a . 50 G. I.
