Scangauge II or Ultragauge

I am considering purchasing a unit that will provide me with digital information such as engine coolant temperature. I have three units in mind, The first is an Edge CS2, the second is a ScanGauge II and the third is the Ultragauge. I really like the Edge CS2 but the cost is a bit high for me right now. I have not completely ruled the Edge out. So I am looking at the Scangauge II ($135) and the Ultragauge ($70). I would like to hear your experiences for those running any one of these THREE units. What do you like/dislike? Is there one you'd recommend to a friend? I am looking for help in making this decision. Thanks in advance for your time.

I have the ultragauge and I like it. its does everything I want. it reads rail pressure and codes and thats what i wanted it for.

Dave I have the scanguage II it's a good unit . I went on their website to input the rail pressure feature which I will do tomorrow. I think that is a must . Is this for your 03 ?

Hey p-Bar! Yes, it is for my '03. This is going to sound stupid but I wanted to monitor Engine Coolant Temperature without installing another gauge. I try but I have very little desire to be crawling around under the dash and trying to find a suitable place for another gauge, so this looked like a smart way to do that. I have a question, I'd like to have the RP feature also. Is it difficult to input the rail pressure feature????

Does the UG read transmission temp on your truck?

Dave I have tried in the past to get rail pressure to work . You have to program in a line of code (it's easy) but haven't had any luck . The website has posted new code I will try and let you know . RM has an 06 so that truck uses CANBUS easier to get RP and others .

I went to the website and wrote down all the code lines or information for the pre '06 diesel rail pressure. Hoping the instructions explain all of this since there is a TXD code, RXF, RXD and MT#. I have an Isspro Rail Pressure gauge in the cab now but it sounds like it is grinding up a pound of hamburger when the truck is running.... Ok, that is a bit of an exaggeration but it does make a grinding sound!

I have ran both the SG and the UG in my 2005 and my vote is for the UG hands down.

I can't think of anything I liked about the SG more than the UG.

John does the rail pressure work on the UG?

Yes it works on my 05 and dad's 06 (where it is installed now). I am unsure of other years.

I have a UG gauge, my best $70 spent on my truck.
The only thing I was disappointed was that the max boost pressure that I could read was 22.34 psi (scaling factor issue).

Yes but that is a OBDII limitation and not a UG limitation.

I got my Scangauge last night. Installed it and am very pleased with it. Mounted it on the steering column right behind the Hazards button. I don't see myself using any of the fuel fill-up type functions. Mostly just the gauges. I have the voltage and coolant temp in the top row and on the bottom I have boost and intake air temp. It's the coolant I wanted the most. I'll be towing this upcoming weekend. The ambient temperature on the trip out is supposed to be upper 80's and the trip home is supposed to me low 90's. We shall see!
