I read a post a while back that the "safe" temp for pre-turbo (pyro installed in the exhaust manifold) was 1250. While towing I keep the temps at 1150 or below. When I see the needle approaching that mark I start backing off the peddal. I keep reading that some of you guys push the 1300 mark. I tow some long stiff grades and the power is not a problem, but I worry that the temp will shorten engine life. Can I push it above the 1250 mark for a short duration (spike)?

I also use 1250 as my limit. Banks uses 1300 and Mark at TST uses that number although he has said that these engines can stand quite a bit of heat. My . 02 is to be safe.

While towing I limited mine to 1300 deg. Racing it will barry the guage 1500+ for just seconds. On my 12 valve the EGT are never a problem until I rev it over 2600 RPMs. Even towing a back hoe up a 5% grade the corners where the problem not EGT. Up that guage I reach 1100 deg max.

It's just like a cutting torch you can hit the metal with that great heat for seconds w/o cutting it but if it dwell there too long it cuts through it.

Thanks guys for the reply. This was a peace of mind question. When pulling my car hauler up the Grapevine, which is a stiff long grade, I can keep it at 60 mph, but the ETGs head for the 1200 mark about half way up. Thats when I back off and have to work the peddle. I am able to run 50 to 55 mph while keeping the ETGs below 1150. I guess I'm conserative in my old age.
