While towing I limited mine to 1300 deg. Racing it will barry the guage 1500+ for just seconds. On my 12 valve the EGT are never a problem until I rev it over 2600 RPMs. Even towing a back hoe up a 5% grade the corners where the problem not EGT. Up that guage I reach 1100 deg max.
It's just like a cutting torch you can hit the metal with that great heat for seconds w/o cutting it but if it dwell there too long it cuts through it.
