Has anyone disassembled one of the new pumps and compared it to the old pump to see if there is a difference? Is there a bypass channel or any internal differences?

Cary

I bought one and put it in parallel to the original stock location pump ... ... ... ... except I relocated it to the frame. I'm hoping for no variation in psi, but I'll find out later today.

Looking forward to hearing about it!... Take some pics please... Where did you run the power from & if you tapped the stock harness, did you go to larger wire?

I purchased a Vulcan Relocation Kit from Geno's Garage. I believe it was 69. 00 plus shipping. It comes with everything you need to relocate the pump about 12 to 18 inches from the tank. I was impressed how easy the job was. Geno's kit comes with 3/8 hose and all the fittings necessary to complete the job. If you think that the 3/8 hose is not large enough you can purchase the kit direct from Vulcan and it will come with a 1/2 in hose and will also come with a hose to go from the filter housing to the VP44. The Vulcan kit I believe is around 129. 00. You just have to decide if it is worth the extra money. I didn't feel it was necessary and so far it has proved it wasn't. The thing is I am running pretty much stock. I am running a constant 12 - 13 psi except for WOT which sucks it down to 9. 5 to 10 psi. I am pleased with the entire job including the new pump since mine was producing a whopping 5 psi and sucking down to 0. I believe the best and most important addition to the truck was my fuel pressure guage. I will be pulling my 10000 lb fifth wheel to Ft. Bragg on May the 3rd for a week stay. I will let you know what my fuel pressure was for the trip over the mountains when I return. So far I am tickled pink with everthing. Oh by the way I ordered the pump from Cummins West and it was 64. 90 plus 10 % for shipping and it was overnight to my door. Great service from the Redding Ca. store. Oo. Oo.

Cleaned everything up and zip tied all the hoses and wires so that they wouldn't be dangling around. Took it to the fuel station last night and could only suck it down to 10psi at WOT.

My stock located OEM pump was at 12/13 idle and could be pulled down to 5 at WOT, so the addition of this new pump in parallel is definitely worth it IMO. I went to Home Depot and got some barb fittings along with a T and assembled it at home. When the Geno's kit came, I just simply T'd into the supply to the stock pump and T'd into the outlet of the pump (both T'd into the hoses with the assembly from HD).

I used a relay from Advanced Auto (MR78) and simply tapped into the "hot" supplied to the original pump (the white wire, I believe, definitely NOT the black). I did not tap into the black, but used a chassis ground instead.

One thing I DID add to Geno's kit was a rubber insulator between the frame and the bracket supplied from Geno's.

Cool thread. .

Called my local Cummins shop in Savannah, Ga today. They had 3 in stock for $60 something, didn't even listen to the something after I heard the $60. Told them the part number (4090046) and it was for a school bus campaign, they said OK. They asked if I was a dealer, said no. They put me on hold, came back and said I can't sell you those "because they are for a campaign"! BUT, I can cross ship you 3 from Atlanta (they have 37) and they will be there tomorrow. Duh, OK. Ordered the Vulcan kit last night (from Vulcan) so hope I am covered for another 2 years or so. .

A customers truck get had the lift pump go out. Do you guys recommend going FaSS or the 70$ pump and the vulcan line kit?

i wonder if this 70$ pump is really any different from the original LP

Boy did get a deal. Was down in south Texas when #3 lift pump went. Had to go to the local dealer. The engine lift pump is no longer stocked. Got to replace with the in tank lift pump. $500 later truck is running great. Fuel pressure is steady 8psi WOT pressure drops to about 71/2 psi then you can see the pressure kick back up to 8PSI. The service people told me 8PSI is all this pump will put out,but the amount of fuel will vary. Sure hope so. I did not know about this new $60 lift pump Hind site is always 20/20 could have saved big bucks. The dealer said this is D/C answer to the lift pump problem we don't have. What can I say we pays our money and our ride . Oo. Clem

We are a very rare group in the automotive industry. We have a commercial grade diesel engine that is not supported directly my it's manufacturer (under warranty). Policy dictates that DC handles the entire truck, including the engine (that it did not produce) and any "enhancements" that Dodge decides the truck needs (like changing and relocating a new fuel pump to tank). DC also profits from this deci$ion. Many of us on the TDR are do it yourself, especially out of warranty. I personally refuse to deal with the "dealer" unless I have NO other choice. This website allows many of us to take things into our own hands and enables use to deal directly with Cummins. Knowing part numbers and specific things to tell the parts department sometimes makes all the difference in the world. I actually enjoy the challenge of circumventing Dodge when dealing with my truck. My local Cummins shop is fantastic to me so I am a happy camper. After reading every single line of this thread, I opted to pickup three of the campaign pump kits for about $225 over-nighted to my door. Will relocate to frame rail (Vulcan) for simplicity of future changes and I agree that fluid pumps are more efficient pushers than pullers. Clem, you did fine. If you have a problem in the future, the nearest dealer can fix you up. I will plan to crawl under my truck and change my own pump IF I ever have a failure away from home. However, with gauges, you often see the pump on it's downhill slide. I change them before they die, at my home on my schedule. For this reason, I have only been down once in 210K miles and it's because I ran out of fuel 1 friggin mile from the pump! :D

EB. You gotta make that decision for yourself. If you are fixing the truck for someone else, sounds like they would rather write a check than fix it themselves. You need to explain the two choices (aftermarket pump solution) or dealer in tank solution. You want to leave them an easy repair in the future. FaSS or campaign pump choice is your/their DECISION. As long as the engine gets fuel, it's the right choice! For the CHEAP price of the campaign pumps, get two (or 3) and have spares. . Dodge will always have the in tank option for you down the road. . My 2 cents. .

The vulturess on eBay are already using these to make $$... one is going for well over $135 right now... it is the same "kit" we bought #@$%!

I got my campaign lift pump at dealer cost. It was $46. The guys on Evil bay aren't the only ones making money.

Chris,

How's the new pump doing? I am getting ready to replace #3 and have been talking to BD Diesel prducts. Sounds like their pump kit is the same deal.

Gotta shop around, some places will not sell them to you, others say how many do you want. I got mine from Savannah, Ga and then called back a few months later to ask a question and the guy freaked out that someone sold me a campaign pump (actually 3), said internal use only. .

They did order them from their Atlanta hub as the girl said she could not sell me any from their shops' stock. .

I received 2 from Cummins West out of the Redding, Ca. store. No questions asked and shipped direct to my door. Purchased over the phone transaction done in about 15 minutes and received the next day.

Has anyone bought one of these pumps lately. I need two and was wondering if they are still out there for $65 or less.

Please don't waste your hard earned money on these campaign pumps! They're absolutely no different from the original pumps. I thought they were the steal of a lifetime and bought 2 for $65. 00 each. My first pump lasted 2 months. It started out fine - 15 psi all the time. One day on my way home from work, I hear this funny noise coming from the pump (I put the Vulcan reloc kit on, so the pump is basically under the cab). The FP gauge read a flaky 8-10 psi . I kept the pump on for another 2 weeks until it starting nosing down to 5 psi. I replaced it with the other campaign pump. That piece of sh** lasted exactly 4 weeks before it started doing the same thing. I am disgusted with these pumps - if I wasn't so trusting, I would have done what the smart guys are doing and put in a Fass pump. As soon as I convince my wife and get some cash up, I'm going to do what I should have done a year ago and buy the Fass.
