I was at the dealership this morning getting the tire pressure monitor fixed.
I started walking around and found something:
a 2006 3500 Dually SLT Mega Cab 4x2, 6 speed manual with the 5. 9 H. O. Oo.
It has a Hidden Hitch Gooseneck, Exhuast brake, and 98,000 miles.
My truck has 11,000 miles. In that time I have done 4 oils changes thanks to the DPF!
I have no problems working on a truck. I know it will need a clutch before to long.
I hardly work my truck, I rarely tow. I will be moving next year with a few more moves in the next 6 years, probably with a gooseneck trailer.
I believe I will be happier with the 2006: No headaches with the DPF, better gas mileage (I get 13).
I will have to pay for it. They will give me more for my trade than the 2006 costs, but it will be over 10 grand short of the payoff. I will be putting down 6. I believe the added cost now will pay dividends in less expenses later.
What do you guys think?

OK, I can't believe that I am suggesting this to you because I am one of those 5. 9L holdouts that is probably going to hang on to the ones we have until there is nothing left of them. But, there are two factors that I am going to say would make me keep the 2010 in your case. First, a 2006 with 98K and a 5. 9L is still a 5 year old truck with 98K on it. The engine warranty is almost up and I'm doubtful that the dealership is going to offer a warranty anywhere near what your 2010 has on it. Secondly, I absolutely love the cab and overall features of my 2010 1500 crew cab. As much as I love my 3rd gen 5. 9's, I don't think I'd give up the comfort of the 4th gens for them.

4 oil changes in 10,000 miles is not a good reason to trade. Ask your self why you bought the 2010 when you did, is that reason still there?, what is the history of the 2006 truck?, why did he trade in that one, there are a lot of factors to think about. You took a big hit on depreciation on your 2010, that will get smaller as time goes on, the big depreciation years are year one, and year four, if money is the issue then do what you have to do, if not I would ride out the 2010 truck, just my 2 cents.

I would never trade in a truck I broke in new for someone else's used truck, unless I was in dire financial need.

In purely financial terms, the best thing with your needs might be an economical vehicle to drive and rent a truck when you move.

Seems to be a pretty consistent thread with new trucks where the people that don't work them hard are unsatisfied, but those that work hard do well.

Good luck whichever way you go.

Hmm. . a 5 year old truck being traded 2K before the warranty expires would make me worry.

4x4 for a 4x2 and its going to cost you??

Spend a lot less cash, buy a clutch and some deletes and be happier with the 2010!

I agree with the above. I love my 06 mega but it now is more for sentimental reasons than practical. You can do A LOT of oil changes for 10K. The 06 will potentially need suspension work, carrier bearings, injector work, clutch, brakes and other miscellaneous fluid changes to make sure it is trouble free for the next 100,000 miles. If you don't care about engine warranty, delete all the unnecessary stuff and enjoy better power and fuel economy for the remainder of your truck ownership. I haven't heard one person so far wish they had left the emissions on their truck, but we also haven't heard from anyone that has 100K deleted miles.

X2!!!

Don't do it.

Take the money that you are thinking about throwing into the deal and use it for upgrades to the 2010 instead.

If you sold your 2010 outright and then went back to the dealer to buy the 2006 outright without a trade you might come out of it decent but trading down with the deal being offered will put you in a bad place.

JMHO.

Mike. :)

How much are they wanting for the 06. If its any where close to the 10 it's robbery. I just bought an 04. 5 2500 loaded quad cab 4x4 with 119,000 for $15,000. Last year bought one just like it with a little over 100k for $12,000.

How much will you give me for a broken mouth sway back mare? A Shelby cobra? Sold!

I'm a 5. 9'guy through and through but dadgum feller your talking crazy. Do a good quality delete kit get a smarty and keep on trucking. Either way your out of warranty but I would rather have the devil I know.

Also, to the guys shy of buying a truck off the lot with little remaining warranty here's your chance at a good deal. Guys that can't afford any down time trade at 98,000 not guys that hate their trucks. Think about it, if you had a turd you'd drop it right off not milk it all the way out.

Well, I took the plunge.
Currently, I couldn't be happier. My monthly payment almost dropped in half.
I feel like I have my first diesel back. I've had a smile on my face for the last two days. :D
Time will tell if it was a good decision or not... I did get a 36 month, 36k mile warranty. It was cheap and covers almost everything.
To be perfectly honest, shortly after buying the 2010, I wished I had found an older 5. 9. I've been talking to the wife about finding a mega cab 5. 9, and I found one.
This truck is more 'rough around the edges' and I like that. It's no where near as rough as the W350 nor the D250, but I like it.
It has a BD exhaust brake on it that works almost as well as the 6. 7 factory brake.
I did take all of y'alls suggestions into mind before I signed. So far, 200 miles, it was the right choice.

What in the Sam he'll are you going to do with a two wheel drive other than get stuck?

A two wheel drive with a limited slip can go almost anywhere a four wheel drive with open diffs can go.
Don't get me wrong, the 4x4 was handy, I just wished it had locking hubs.
I used the low range for gate traffic at the base, and backing the few trailers I pulled. It sucked turning tight, though.

Nope. It is also worse when you throw the added weight of a diesel in the front.
Believe what you want...

I did say 'almost'. Most of these trucks are too long to go 'off-roading'. The only real detriment left is heavy mud. Then, I completely agree. The diesel is extremely heavy.

My guess is you explained your real reason for dissatisfaction with your 2010 in your first statement.

Or not... I have a LSD in my 4wd and still have to use 4wd all the time. . Too much front end weight and torque to make 2wd useable in low traction conditions. . Especially with the surface area of a DRW, your going to hate it come winter, if you ever leave the wet side.
