Has anybody ever rebuilt the LSD in the rear of their 3500. Mine is starting to act up and I was told that to ignore it would lead to more problems down the line. When turning sharply with the go pedal pushed the rear ended feels like it is dragging. I can feel it in the cab. Any hints or tips on this job would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Travis

That actually sounds like it's working the way it should, and that all you need to do is add some limited slip additive

Mike

Replace it with some locker if you really need it to work. Mine won't spin both tires in a straight line in the rain much less when i need it offroad. Think I will probably get the no-spin soon.

I talked with many of the Differential shops last week with the intentions of ordering a Detroit locker. Now I have run the Detroit in all of my other single rear wheel trucks and like them alot. Every shop stated that the dually with a trailer and the detroit, coupled with the torque of the cummins will break parts, and it won't be the detroit. One shop tech stated he was running a tightly stacked and rebuilt Trac-loc on his ford dually, and liked it much better than the Detroit with the broken axle shaft. The restacked (with new parts) T/L will bark and chatter, but will slip just a tad with the dually traction before other things break. WIth one wheel on ice and the other on pavement, both sides will turn.

So, I ended up with a T/L friction/steels kit ($133) and a differential spreader ($220). If I get stuck again this winter in a half inch of snow like last winter, out comes the T/L, and in goes the Detroit, and I'll carry a few shafts.

Where did you buy the rebuild kit from. I might be interested in going that route. I am still pondering a selective locker. Has anyone run any of the electric one's or cable operated one's yet. I talked to the 4wheel drive shop near my house and they don't even want to put an arb in they say they have had too many back to put more in. Maybe they don't know how to install correctly??

I just got the parts and tool today. I ordered them Friday. I got them from Randy's ring and pinion. www.ringpinion.com They seem like some no BS guys and they didn't try to sell me the $550 Detroit, rather they reccommended the T/L reclutch and restack. I'm gonna try this route first, as the new clutches cost $133. The part number of the T/L D80 is DAN701129X

The issue I have with the ARB, and it might not even be an issue is the machining of the diff carrier cap. Seems to me that the would weaken the cap considerably because a notch is being taken out.

reclutch

Can you keep me posted about your rebuild and how hard/easy the job was. I think I may end up going this route if the friction additive doesn't do the trick.

Thanks,

Travis

Is there any follow-up to the re-clutch? I am wanting to tighten up the rear-end, but I tow and haul too much to really want a locker.

Does anyone know if the re-clutch kit will tighten up the rear?

First, you don't need the case spreader. Most people actually add too many shims (and therefore too much bearing preload) using a spreader... I have taken a lot of D60/70/80s apart without a case spreader.

The clutches can be restacked (dodge stacks wrong them to lessen the LSD's effectiveness) to make it more aggressive. Also, since it is a two piece carrier, you can add a clutch and spacer to both sides and then tighten the carrier back together... it will be VERY aggressive. I did this to a D70 Powerloc with EXCELLENT results... .

Also, if your LSD doesn't act like it is working (like lack of traction), most likely it is worn out... all of mine tended to be worn out at around 150k if taken care of and sooner if abused (forced to spin a single trac)... rebuilding them does not require resetting the gearset... A d80 LSD in good condition should almost act "locked" because they are aggressive... the D70 powerloc is also about as good... I have been in situations with one wheel on ice and one on bare pavement and have taken off with little issue.
