I talked with many of the Differential shops last week with the intentions of ordering a Detroit locker. Now I have run the Detroit in all of my other single rear wheel trucks and like them alot. Every shop stated that the dually with a trailer and the detroit, coupled with the torque of the cummins will break parts, and it won't be the detroit. One shop tech stated he was running a tightly stacked and rebuilt Trac-loc on his ford dually, and liked it much better than the Detroit with the broken axle shaft. The restacked (with new parts) T/L will bark and chatter, but will slip just a tad with the dually traction before other things break. WIth one wheel on ice and the other on pavement, both sides will turn.
So, I ended up with a T/L friction/steels kit ($133) and a differential spreader ($220). If I get stuck again this winter in a half inch of snow like last winter, out comes the T/L, and in goes the Detroit, and I'll carry a few shafts.
