Trade in value

It seems like the 3rd gen trucks are commanding a premium on the private market.
Because of this, are the dealers giving any better trade in values?
I plan to stop by Dennisdilliondodge next week to look at a new SB. I'm thinking if I can get a decent trade in price on my 03 with Lance camper, I may be driving a new truck back to Calif.
I know selling outright is always better, but it's nice not having to deal with it.

Before you purchase out of state make sure they are positive it will pass California emissions when the time comes. Dave Smith knows how it's done because of the volume they do. Not sure about other dealers. Most stuff now is 50 state compliant, but never trust the state!

Dealers will always beat you down on your trade. It's how they make money. Most will give you an auction price.

Pop the 2003 on Ebay and meet at your bank or airport if you feel nice. It is worth several thousand dollars and you will spend the same amount of time with ebay as you do getting 'auction price' at the dealer. Most ebay buyers are more pleasant than the used car buyer at the dealer. 2003 is simply too old for most new dealers to even sell. Most people will be very happy to skip sales tax for private sale in some states and get a pre-emmision truck without 2nd hand dealer mark ups. Most bidders already have a bank loan approved. If not keep the $500 and list it again.

Ditto on that. DSM sent all my paperwork by Priority mail. It arrived before my transported truck did. Our DMV here sees DSM sold trucks come in all the time. Although the '07's were 50 state compliant the Ca ones still had to have a sticker on them. You'll have to weigh it at a public scale. Remove the tailgate and spare and drive it onto the scale low on fuel. It might help you get it below a weight tier.

Hypothetical situation : So.....I reside in CA, and I take my 5th wheel to an RV Park in NC. I have my RV set up, and decide to go sight seeing or make a grocery run. I become involved in an accident that deems my truck a total loss. I can't go purchase a new truck and drag my 5th wheel home??? Glad I don't live in Kommy*Fornia.....

Fellas, I believe you can buy a truck outside of Cal. but what it all boils down to is MONEY.....Money in the form of taxes. I believe when you try to register it in the great state of California you will paid your taxes. Now here’s the big question....Does it get registered as a “new” vehicle or a “used” vehicle. I believe California considers a used vehicle with more then 7,500 miles on it. I think if you try to register it with less then that they will get “all” of the taxes of a new car. If more then 7,500 miles it will be a “used” vehicle and you may save “some” taxes...Not a lot. Not sure but I think thats kinda of how it works....Most dealers will register your vehicle where you live and you pay the taxes of that county...Whatever your county percentage is...

I'm almost positive if the truck is 50 state legal, which the new Ram is, there is no problem registering it as new in Ca.
According to DSM and Dennisdillion, I would pay them the appropriate Ca sales tax and they give me a temp certificate to drive it home and I would register it with the DMV. It would be registered as a new veh.
When I bought my 03 HO, I had to buy it in Az and register it in my Dads name in Iowa until it had 7500 mi as it wasn't Ca legal at the time.

That is what I was thinking of. That exact 7500 mile for Fed vs CA emissions rule was to keep people from going out of state to get new vehicles with less emissions stuff on them. Hopefully it is one standard on new stuff.

It is worth a call to the CA DMV with a VIN number to make sure you don't have problems. It is an unbelievable PIA with CARB and CA when you do have problems with emissions and new/used vehicles etc.

Make your best deal before mentioning a trade. Then see where you go. Remember if they give you 20K then you save lets say 8% sales tax that makes your trade worth $21,600. They will charge you sales tax based on where you live.

Did out of state with Dave Smith in Idaho it was real easy!

I traded my '03 today and i got $13,000 for it .. been trying to sell it locally here for nearly a year and no-one has cash around here that wants a 10 yr old truck. Those with cash are buying new. I started off at 20K and came all the way to 15K with no takers. At least I got a fair price on the new one, invoice price and addn'l 2 k rebate.

E7mack96 what did you have to give for the 14 Ram EcoDiesel if you don't mind me asking?? I test dove one today with a friend that wants to buy one. Was very impressed with the ride compared to my 2013 2500 Mega Cab. It rode nice for a 1500. Very quiet motor. List price here in Ca. was 53,010 with all the bells and whistles No air ride. I think the dealer told my friend they are giving a 2,500 cash back till end of the month.

The 2014 says emissions are good for all states including CA.

Sticker on my truck was $57,285 and I got it for $52,278 and less the 2k rebate for a net of $50,278.. - trade + taxes , fees yada~yaya. I would have liked to get a little more for my truck, but the Florida sun has really put a hurt on the paint job, clearcoat flaking off the truck all over, etc.. I did buy it in Dec 2008 used for $17,400 at auction, so i got to drive it 5 1/2 years+ for only 4,400 depreciation - not too bad overall. LOL.

There is no negotiating with Dennisdillion, their posted price is the price. They were about $1500 less then Dave Smith.
I see some 3rd gen trucks in So Cal for low to high $30Ks. thats list price so not sure if they're selling.

If you can get it to Calif and register it on your own with the 50 state legal emissions, then your taxes will be cheaper. As in my used 5ver, I purchased in Oregon, when I went to pay the sales taxes at my DMV, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that you only pay the base Ca. sales tax which was a point and a quarter cheaper because you don't pay the local sales tax that is tacked on to the base Tax.

JUST TRADED in my 06 3500 5.9 4by 4 l live in Ca bougjt new 3500 larmie 4by . I phoenix Az Larry Miller Avondale.Great selection and price. My high blue was 28k they gave me 26k. When you go tp Ca dmv you need a weigjt ticket and a smog certificate. You will also pay the difference in the tax between what you payed in thestate you bought it in and what you would have payed in Ca. In my case it was another 1,900 plus about 800 to regester ot. Ca views all pickups and l mean all, as commercial vech. The DMV will give you a temp registration until you can provide title or certificate of origin. I just went thru all this crap with DMV a week ago so what l have posted is real and current. Also take the truck down with you becausw they visually have to inspect. Hope this helps those buying a trk outof state

I payed 7.8 percent in AZ less trade in value. But in wonderful C A you have to pay the tax on the total price. In answer to your question l just payed state tax.Good dealer no commisom sales people so they dont hassle you. Huntington bch Ram has the best price in SCal . These guys had the interior color l wanted plus about 2 k cheaper.
