The stock 5. 9 bolts are amply long as the 6. 7 HB is only 1/16" thicker. I checked it out before installing the HO. The longer bolts would only be needed if you also get the "barring tool adapter" like the stock 6. 7 has. Without it the bolts "may" be too long. Also, the bolts are $8 ea through Cummins.
I have a tip for anyone doing this change though, Invest in a $4 Craftsman (or who ever) 6 point 15mm 1/2" drive socket and make your life a lot easier.

I bought the bolts because I figured it was good to change them, thou they are probably reusable. I think I only paid about 2/ea for them thou.

This is common in many industries. Manufacturers don't (can't) make a proper profit on whole goods any more, so they make it up on the parts.

Not only did Cummins NW want $8 each, they wanted $12 to ship it to my house 25 miles away!

Some Cummins stuff is pricey, but they did give you a fair price as far as the price level goes. Same as an independent shop would get.

UPS ground to your house for $12. 00 if you are in a residential area is fair.

UPS rates have gone up a lot, it takes fuel for the brown planes and trucks so we subsidize that along with everything else.

Cummins still has fair rates for inbound next day air, it is 17% of the price of the part per line item. Weight has no bearing on the rate in most cases.

I have parts flown from the Cummins factory rather than from another Cummins dealer as the freight is cheaper as a rule from the factory.....

Mike. :)

Well I have ordered mine through the local Cummins dealer in Fort Worth.

If you do a stock order there is no shipping, although it will take up to two weeks it still saves you some money if you do not need the parts in a hurry. I saw another post mention this stock order advice and it is available for those who are close to a Cummins dealer. Damper $227. 00, Pulley $47. 77

I did not notice any of you mentioning of painting the damper! Are you going to let it rust? Black heat paint is a thought any suggestions? :D

My buddies gave me a hard time about it but I didn't paint mine either.
I'm finally going to be towing over one of our local mountain passes (Stevens) and I'm looking forward to finding out if the Cummins part works as nicely as the FD.

Do I need a special wrench for the fan removal? Seems like I remember someone saying you need one... just making sure.

I bought a cheapo clutch fan wrench at Oriellys ~ $20 and it fits Cummins and ford junk. Cool thing about it was that it has a 1/2" drive square hole in the end so torquing (42ftLbs) is easy.

Reading is expensive

Well after reading pages 1 through 11 I just realized that I am getting ready to spend some cash. Just installed a SBC Dual Disc last week and I have a Manual G56. Looks like this is just what I need to quiten it down. Lot's of good info, thanks to all who contributed. :)

How did you guys torque down the bolts on the harmonic balancer? Does the engine try to turn over while torquing them down? Thoughts

yes it does. If you have a manual you can just put it in gear of course. Otherwise a barring tool comes in handy.
I suspect you could get the dampener in just the right position that your pushing towards the center of the HB rather than rotating it (like you do for the fan pully) but that would be a real challenge in my estimation.
Hopefully someone has a better idea for auto's.

I have a manual, so I just put it in gear.

Otherwise you'll need a engine barring tool from Cummins for about $45. 3824591 is the part number for the ISB Barring tool. I just bought one yesterday to do the valves on my 05 and dad's 06.

Got this installed on my dad's 06 yesterday. His truck still has the DMF/OEM clutch. It's amazing what it did for the idle, and the DMF shutdown clatter is GONE! We haven't gotten it hot yet, still has ATF in the trans, but have started and shut it down a few times and it sounds like a different truck.

We did it now, so that when he goes to a sold flywheel he won't have to worry about it.

We completed a long pull over the pass this weekend with the trailer and the results were interesting. After having driven this same trip with stock, FD and 6. 7 HO, The FD is clearly the best performer by a fair margin.
The FD did away with the drone at all speeds, smoothed out clutch engagement and the shutter I get from the conOfe while backing up.
The HO stops the drone while climbing mountain passes (5th gear, 50 MPH) but lets it through when I'm at 60~65 and having to use a bit of extra throttle, like climbing small knolls or hills or even bucking a bit of a headwind on the flats.
The HO does very little for the reverse shutter - the FD stopped 95% and sometimes prevented it completely.
Both the FD and HO smooth out forward launches and shifting considerably.

If FD can get rid of the noise at idle, they'll have a winner.

PD,

Just clarifying, you were having issues with engine noises with the FD installed; did you have the same noise issues with the 6. 7 HB installed?

Also, performance related, the 6. 7 HB out performs the 5. 9 HB but is still somewhat inferior to the FD. 6. 7 HB is best option for noise/performance?
