You can get a factory 1 pc with the dampener too.

Yes, and all the info indicates that damper is part of the problem with vibrations on the shaft. Rich at Doghouse is firmly convinced it is the BIGGEST issue. Hence, no damper on this one.

The harmonics was ther before the swap but not as bad. A lot more problems were there also including a dead spot in the throttle right off idle. Thought for sure it was going to be a TC replacement. Swapped shafts and the dead spot went away, shift bounce disappeared, and the bulk of the vibes and weird stuff disappeared. All that is left is the drone\garmonics in a narrow range. At over 75 mph and it smoothes right out and disappears.

Still not sure it it is exhaust, tires, or harmonics. Need to play with some changes to see if I can track it. From the results on the 6. 7 damper it looks promising.

I have a one piece driveshaft and have a harmonic right about 75 mph, gone by 77 and shows up at about 74 mph. I have a 4:10 axle.

I also have a fluid damper. The FD was added after the one piece and didn't change anything as far as the 75 harmonic but did seem to make everything smoother up to 75. I used to have a harmonic at 65 that went away with the FD.

Diesel vibrations can drive you nuts!

Mine is completely smooth at those speeds but it was also fine with the worn out 2 pc.

What rpm's are you running at 72-75 mph? Mine seems to be confined right in the 1950-2050 range. Above and below its fine.

It isn't a vibration like a u-joint or tire, its a cyclic harmonic that seems to everywhere and is more sound than physical.

I guess I should no this right? Not sure of RPMs, got the 3. 73 but slightly bigger tires than stock so I'll just have to play with it.

I don't drive that fast very often but I have played with it in the past trying to find any roughness at speed. I ran it at different intervals up to 85 mph and it always felt good.

Next time I take it out on the freeway I'll do a little experiment for you and see if I can sense anything.

Blacksheep,

When i spoke to peter at south bend today about my new clutch, I asked him about the 6. 7L damper, he raved about your visit and the difference it made. Clutch will be here friday, going to order damper in the morning, going to have to pay a little extra and get the mopar because cummins has a back order.

You just replaced the damper and the bolts, and omitted the "adapter" in the middle, do i need one of thoses or do i already have one?

The adapter is a barring device ( for "barring" the engine over) so no you don't "need" it. You can see it clearly in this picture as I have painted it red. It would have been a lot easier to do the 6. 7 damper when I had the engine out, but at that point I had already spent too much and wasn't clear what all was involved in the damper swap. Your old bolts can be reused if in good shape if not adding the barring device. If you need new ones buy the 6. 7 ones as they are less money.

Trizae,

As stated by others the barring device is optional. I have no idea if it would clear the fan on the 5. 9 engine.

You have to put the 6. 7 damper and 6. 7 fan pulley on together to make it work. The new bolts are up to you. I used my old ones and put Loctite on them.

Godspeed,
Trent

I went down to Cummins yesterday and ordered my parts, about the same as Blacksheep. . plus a 10% military discount!!!

I have a barring tool and was forced to use it. Otherwise, how do you keep the engine from spinning while wrenching on the HB bolts?

EDIT; Duh, I guess I could have put it in gear. .

And the good news is... the belt CAN be changed on a 5. 9 with the 6. 7 damper and fan pulley! I was pretty sure it could but today I actually removed the old belt and installed a new one. Simply release tension on the belt then get the belt in between the fan pulley and damper and then turn the fan pulley which will work the belt through. Very easy.
