I bought used because I didn't want a truck payment and I don't have $50k laying around to buy one outright. It can be a bit of a gamble but you can minimize the risk by buying with fairly low mileage and insist on a record of the service history. I also spoke with the servicing dealer (with the owner permission) to ensure it hadn't been a problematic truck. Car fax isnt bullet proof but in my experiences is pretty accurate for newer vehicles and worth the cost, you can buy a package deal that allows you to check several VINS at a cheaper rate than individual. I Iooked for a long time off and on and bought private, again the risk is probably higher than if you were to go through a dealer but the potential to get a better deal is there. I'm into the truck in my sig with 60k miles for $28k including tax at the BMV. Bought it early this spring. I knew it hadn't been worked hard because the owner had just replaced the OEM tires at 60k which is close to double what I tend to get, there was no GN or 5th wheel hitch and the factory bumper hitch still had the paint inside the receiver. The owner didn't even have a trailer or camper at his house :-laf.

For a Tradesman?

Could be you just live in a more affluent area but from my shopping experiences that mileage generally netted low 30's. That being said it was a good deal, the fella I bought it from was on hard times and looking to get out from under it.

Its the Aisin...Any owner that has the Aisin, 3500/LB you will pay Top dollar. I See 3500/SB 68rfe at 3-5 Grand less. Same line/sale sheet.. the Aisin 3500/LB around here bring $$$$$,

Good catch. I'd have liked an Aisin but like you said they command a premium. My truck was valued low 30's when I bought it and every Aisin equiped truck with similar mileage and condition as mine asking price was mid to upper 30's. I tow frequently but not heavier than 12-14k so I'm confident the 68 will serve me well.

My Take on the 68RFE , its good to around 425Hp and used Additional HP , its not forgiving and has some unfavorable habits, That being said in in many cases its works just fine, cross the line and it will suck up your wallet with extreme prejudice.
